Woman arrested for allegedly abandoning three animals in Stockton...
A woman who abandoned three animals inside a home in the town of Stockton last month has now been arrested for animal cruelty.  Sheriff's officers say they first received a complaint about the dog and two cats being abandoned at a Route 380 address back on July 2.  Officers say their investigation found that 42 year-old Katherine Gonzalez... who is reportedly homeless... had left the animals there with no means of care.  Gonzalez was arrested for overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; failure to provide proper sustenance and abandonment of animals.  She was issued an appearance ticket for Stockton Town Court at a later date.


Man from town of Portland arrested for alleged assault, and imprisonment...        
A man from the town of Portland have been arrested for allegedly restraining another person during an altercation -- in front of children.  Sheriff's deputies were called to an address in the town shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday.  Officers say their investigation showed that 44 year-old Ryan Evans had restrained the victim while making unwanted physical contact with the person.  Deputies say it all happened in the presence of children.  Evans was arrested for third-degree assault... second-degree unlawful imprisonment... and, endangering the welfare of a child.  He was take to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.


Ecklund discusses decision to appoint Bryan Bigelow to replace the late Tony Dolce on City Council...
It was difficult to move forward... but, Jamestown's mayor says it was important to fill the City Council vacancy left by the death of Tony Dolce quickly.  Kim Ecklund says replacing Dolce was going to be a difficult task to begin with.  However... Ecklund says she liked the Ward-2 Republican Committee's decision on Bryan Bigelow... who she has been familiar with through his community work.  In particular, his long-time work with midget football.  Bigelow is also running in the November Special Election to fill out the rest of Dolce's two-year term on Council.  He's running against Democrat Jason Sample.  Ecklund says... with budget time coming quickly... along with other matters... it was important to make an appointment sooner rather than later.  She had 60-days to fill the seat.  However... that would have left an eight member board with no vote to break potential ties.  Ecklund says Bigelow is employed by Northwest Savings... and, has a background in Information Technology.  Tony Dolce passed away July 18.  Ecklund made her comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Glenora Radio Network stations.  


Hochul praises Dunkirk's move to become a "pro-housing community" with groundbreaking on Homesteads project...
Construction of a new, 78-unit affordable housing project in the city of Dunkirk is underway with it's recent groundbreaking.  New York Governor Kathy Hochul joined project developers, stakeholders, and several others in putting shovels in the ground for the Homesteads at Dunkirk Landing project.  Hochul thanked elected officials from Dunkirk for helping make the city a Pro-Housing Community, which is part of the state's plan to create or preserve affordable homes.  She says they are benefiting those communities in New York.  Larry Regan, president of Regan Development, says the $38.2 million project satisfies many of the state's housing goals... including focused upstate redevelopment and strengthening communities.  City Planning and Development Director Vince DeJoy adds city's plan for affordable housing does not end there.  DeJoy says he intends to work with the county's Industrial Development Agency, Immunity Bio and others to make sure the housing is available for workers.  The project will consist of two apartment houses -- one with 48 units on Washington Avenue, and the other with 30 units next to Save-a-Lot on East 4th Street. 


DeJoy says Dunkirk officials will talk with leaders from Brook's TLC about repurposing the current hospital... 
The signing of the steel beam by dozens of officials recently marked a milestone in the construction of the new Northern Chautauqua Hospital in Fredonia.  However... there remains some uncertainty on how Brooks-TLC's current facility in Dunkirk will be used once the new hospital is up and running.  City Planning and Development Director Vince DeJoy says he and Mayor Kate Wdowiasz will meet with Brooks-TLC President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Morris this week to discuss redevelopment plans for that building... so time goes by with no one in that building.  DeJoy was one of the officials in attendance at the beam-signing ceremony.  Morris thanked the community for its "patience, trust, and continued support" for the new hospital at 412 East Main St.  He said the ceremony was a "powerful" reminder that Brooks-TLC's vision is becoming a reality which will include 47 exam rooms... and, dedicated primary and specialty care.  The $223-million project is projected to be completed in late 2029.


BRWS moves to single-elimination this afternoon and evening...
The 13 year-old Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown moves to the single-elimination round this afternoon and evening... and, the host team will be in action at 7 p.m.  Jamestown... which has gone 3-1 so far in the tournament... will play Southeast Champion Tallahassee, Fla. at 7 p.m.  In the 4:30 p.m. game... Bethel, Conn. from New England will take on Ohio Valley Champion... Janesville, Wisc.  Janesville was the only team to beat Jamestown during pool play at Diethrick Park.  The winners move on... the losers go home.

Jamestown woman arrested after three children are found living in deplorable conditions on city's northside...
A city woman has been arrested for allegedly letting three children live in deplorable conditions on Jamestown's northside.  City police say they were called to the address for a domestic incident about 7:30 p.m. Monday.  However... they found that 35-year-old Serina Penhollow had allowed her three children to live in deplorable conditions.  Officers say the home had a quantity of rotten food... accumulated trash... animal feces and a plethora of bugs.  Penhollow was taken into custody on three counts of endangering the welfare of a child... and, the children were turned over to a relative... and, Child Protective Services was notified.  Penhollow was held pending arraignment.


Three arrested in Jamestown as fugitives, or failure to appear during warrant check...
Three people -- two from Warren, Pa. -- have been arrested in Jamestown as fugitives in Jamestown.  City police say a patrol in the area of English and Allen Streets first spotted 42 year-old Amanda Ferguson of Jamestown shortly after 6 p.m., who was sought on a city court warrant for failure to appear.  Officers also check two people who were with Ferguson... and, found that both 33-year-old Caroline Frampton... and, 50 year-old Michael Reynolds of Warren were wanted as fugitives from Warren.  Police say they also recovered a small amount of methamphetamine from Reynolds.  All three were taken to the city jail... and, Reynolds was additionally charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  All three were held pending arraignment.


Rowland says St. Susan's Center coping with loss of compressor to refrigeration/freezer unit...
Despite the recent vandalism to the compressor system of their huge refrigeration-freezer unit... the Jamestown-area's largest soup kitchen is soldiering on.  That from the head of the St. Susan's Center on Water Street in Jamestown.  Executive Director Cherie Rowland says... thanks to several community partners... they've been able to cope so far in feeding people in need... thanks in large part to Jamestown Ice & Storage which has taken most of their perishable food items.  They've also been helped by other entities -- including several area food pantries.  The Center reported Monday that someone broke into their location about 5:30 a.m. Sunday and "completely gutted the system... " apparently stealing components for their monitary value.  Rowland says this hampers their recovery efforts to build a food supply of -- say chicken -- from local restaurants and stores they can use eventually for a days' meals.  She says they'll add to the amount of meat or other food stuffs they have and soon they have enough to feed the 150 to 200 people they receive daily.  Rowland says this also points out the urgency of getting a new, walk-in freezer at the center.  She says they have been awarded two state grants... but, adds they need to match those dollars.  If you would like to help out... go to their website at stsusanscenter.org.

Jamestown woman sought as fugitive in Erie, Pa. arrested in Jamestown...
A city woman wanted as a fugitive from justice in Erie, Pa. has been arrested in Jamestown.  City police say they... along with Sheriff's Officers working a Gun-Involved Violence Enforcement detail... responded to a westside address for a warrant investigation last week.  Officers says they arrested 37-year-old Lisa Weaver in connection with a 2023 assault in Erie.  Weaver was taken to the city jail and charged with being a fugitive.  She was held pending extradiction.


Gerry Rodeo announces final numbers for 2026 four-day event...
The final numbers are out on the recently concluded Gerry Rodeo... and, despite the predictions for rain, it was another very successful rodeo.  Spokesman Paul Cooley says nearly 10,000 fans filed through the gates while the kitchen crew served approximately 2,500 meals over the four-day 81st annual event.  Rodeo Chairman Tom Atwell stated that he was pleased with this year’s event, which featured more than 225 cowboys and cowgirls from across the nation and Canada who competed for more than $50,000 in prize money.  Next year's rodeo... put on by the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department... will be held Aug 4-7, 2027.


Babe Ruth World Series into day five with pool play wrapping up...
A rough fifth-inning that produced eight-runs for Janesville, Wisc. led to host Jamestown's first loss in the 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series.  Janesville, though, had to hold on as Jamestown scored four-runs in the bottom of the fifth to trail, 10-5.  However... the host team could not plate any more runs, and lost by that score.  Jamestown is now 2-1 in the series... and, have their final game in pool play tonight at 8:40 p.m. -- due to morning rain delays -- against Southwest, MO.  Janesville is done with pool play... and, went 3-1 and will move onto the single-elimination round.

Both Mililani, HI and Atlantic Shore, NJ are 3-0 in the tournament.  Atlantic Shore will play 2-0 Tallahassee, FLA this afternoon at Diethrick Park.  There will be two final pool play games Thursday morning.

Tenn. man dies from injuries suffered in Thruway crash in Hanover...
A man from Tennessee was killed overnight when his tractor-trailer went off of the state Thruway and crashed into a guard rail in the town of Hanover.  State Police in Buffalo say they were called to the scene in the eastbound lanes of I-90 shortly after 10 p.m.  Troopers determined that 54 year-old Petro Liben of Barlett, Tenn.'s big-rig went off the north shoulder of the roadway and hit the guide rail.  Police say Liben had facial and abdominal injuries... and, was flown to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo where he later died.  The state Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit... Collision Reconstruction Unit... and, state DEC Spill Response Unit were also called to the scene.  State Police say their investigation is continuing.


Man from Fluvanna arrested for DWI, Leandra's Law violation after being stopped for speeding...
A Fluvanna man faces a Leandra's Law violation after he was allegedly found to be driving drunk in Lakewood with a young child in the vehicle.  Lakewood-Busti Police say a patrol on East Fairmount Avenue spotted a speeding vehicle shortly after 11 p.m. last Sunday.  Officers say they conducted a traffic stop... and, found the driver -- 35 year-old Michael Thorp -- to be intoxicated.  Police say Thorp briefly resisted when they took him into custody.  Thorp faces several charges including: DWI... Aggravated DWI for having a blood alcohol content of .18 or higher... Aggravated DWI for the Leandra's Law violation... endangering the welfare of a child... resisting arrest... speeding and endangering the welfare of a child.  He was released with appearance tickets for Busti Town Court.


Investigation continues into freezer compressor gutting, theft from St. Susan Center...
Vandals have gutted the compressor system for the huge freezer used at the Jamestown-area's largest soup kitchen.  Officials with the St. Susan's Center say someone broke into to the Water Street location about 5:30 a.m. Sunday and "completely gutted the system... " which is essential to storing the food that helps fulfill their mission.  Officials add that the theft has had "a significant impact on our operations and our ability to serve those who rely on us."  However... they add that they have had an "amazing response from the community."  They especially thanked Jamestown Ice & Storage for quickly stepping up to help save the produce and meat that could be preserved.  They also thanked the many local food pantries that came forward to take and distribute food that we were unable to transport.  They also thanked Lindsey Refrigeration in Northeast, Pennsylvania and Ben Weitsman Recycling Center for their quick response.  If you have any information that might help to cathc those responsible... you're asked to call Jamestown Police at 483-7536.


Schumer travels to Westfield-Portland area to stand with Concored Grape growers to call on USDA to support them in loss of contracts with Refresco...
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer was in the Westfield-Portland area Monday to support local Concord Grape growers who recently had their contracts cancelled by a major processor.  Schumer joined with local growers, and, farm bureau and other officials to announce he will press the U.S. Department of Agriculture to purchase excess grapes they grow for domestic food assistance programs to support growers.  The New York Democrat says grape growers are current under a "triple-threat."  The first being the cancelled contracts, the second is increased costs, and the third is market uncertainty.  Schumer adds that he got the USDA to do the same last year in the wake of losses for growers and producers.  County Legislator Fred Johnson of Johnson Estate Winery also called on the federal government to level the playing field with international markets, such as Europe and Australia.  Earlier this year... Schumer says Producer Refresco suddenly canceled contracts with about 126 farmers across New York and Pennsylvania after they had already invested in preparing their vineyards for this season, leaving local growers in a lurch. 


Wendel says current budget holding "very solid" so far, but, has some concerns for 2027...
From a budget stand-point... Chautauqua County is in a "very solid" position through the first-half of 2026.  However... County Executive P-J Wendel says there are a couple of concerns.  One was recently dealt with when the county's Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services again crunched it's Safety Net numbers... and, didn't found they didn't have to take $2.8-million out of the undesigated fund balance to cover additional costs.  Wendel says unfunded state mandates also remain an issue because it takes up 61% of the local tax share.  Wendel also railed against New York's Welfare system... and, it's costs.  He says they remain the highest in the nation.  He believes there is fraud in the state system -- like what's been found in other states.  County leaders recently found fraud in it's own system... with a former Social Services Clerk being arrested for allegedly stealing from current benefit recipients.  Wendel needs to present his 2027 budget proposal to the county legislature by Sept. 25.

Fire destroys Cherry Creek home overnight, no injuries reported...
Several Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County fire departments battled flames that destroyed a home early this morning in the town of Cherry Creek.  Chautauqua County fire dispatchers say Cherry Creek firefighters were called to the scene at 6630 Main St. just after Midnight.  Officials say mutual aid was also called in from Ellington, Conewango, Randolph, Leon, Forestville, Sunset Bay, and South Dayton.  Fire investigators were called in shortly before 1 a.m. to look for the cause... which remains under investigation.  No injuries were reported.

Pa. woman arrested for allegedly trying to use rock to smash out windows at downtown Jamestown business...
A Pennsylvania woman has been arrested for allegedly trying to smash out the windows of a business in downtown Jamestown early Sunday morning.  Police add that 33 year-old Eve Yea also allegedly assaulted an arresting officer.  Police were called to the scene just after 2:30 a.m. for an unwanted female... and say Yea with a large rock in her hand.  Officers tried to intervene... but, say she failed to comply.  Police then tried to take Yea into custody... however... she resisted arrest... and, assaulted the officers.  She was charged with second-degree assault... obstruction... and, resisting arrest.


Ecklund says 2027 budget process well underway in Jamestown...
The city of Jamestown is about half-way through initial discussions with department heads about their budgets in 2027.  However... Mayor Kim Ecklund is cautioning not to read too much into the numbers this early in the process.  Ecklund updated the City Council this past week on where the process is... which is being headed early on by Comptroller Ericka Thomas.  She says Phase-one is mainly department head "wish lists" to determine what's needed, and what isn't.  Ecklund says the current year's budget is not far off from actual spending... although there are areas of concern with overtime... especially in the fire department.  She adds that recent sales tax figures showed the second-quarter brought in about $130,000 more than was budgeted.  However... that barely made up for a down first-quarter.  Ecklund has to present the new budget by... or on Oct. 8.  The City Council then has until December 1st to adopt a new spending plan.  Ecklund made her comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Glenora Radio Network stations.


City woman arrested for allegedly driving with more than two-times the legal limit of alcohol...
A woman from Jamestown has been arrested after allegedly found to be driving with more than two-times the legal limit of alcohol in her system.  City police say they stopped 40 year-old Amy Elliott in the area of Cherry and West Seventh Streets just after Midnight Saturday for a traffic violation.  Officers say they determined that Elliott was driving drunk and she was taken into custody.  She's charged with Aggravated DWI for driving with a blood alcohol content of .18 or higher... and other traffic violations.  Ellicott was processed and issued an appearance ticket for City Court.


Jamestown is 2-0 at 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series, with an off-day today...
The host Jamestown team in the 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series has it's scheduled day-off today... but, has made headlines in the tournament.  The local squad is now 2-0 in the series after beating Westfield, Massachusetts last night, 13-1, in six innings.  They won Saturday over Nederland, Texas, 8-2.  Play resumed at 11 this morning with Bethel, Conn. taking on Atlantic Shore from Egg Harbor, NJ.  There's free admission to ALL the games this week, thanks to several sponsors.  Host President Kim Ecklund says the Babe Ruth Committee bought out Friday's games... which will now be a special day for Veteran's... and, to recognize America's 250th birthday.  Ecklund says... while admission is free for all games... they especially want veteran's to attend Friday's games at 4:30 and 7 p.m.  She adds "what better way to celebrate America's birthday than at a baseball stadium."

Two other teams are 2-0.  One is Mililani, Hi... which shut-out Southwest, MO Sunday, 4-0.  Tallahassee, Florida also remained unbeaten with the most runs in one game so far, blanking Puerto Rico, 21-0.

**Bulletin**Forecast of rain Sunday forces earlier starts for Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown...

ue to impending inclement weather forecasted for Sunday... all four games of the 13 year-old Babe Ruth World Series have been moved up two hours.  Host President Kim Ecklund tells us that means the first game between Southeast, MO from the Midwest Plains and Southwest Regional winner Mid-County from Nederland, TX., will begin at 9 a.m.  The second game would be moved to 11:30 a.m., the third game will be at 2:30 p.m., and, the fourth at 5 p.m.  That is all... of course... weather dependent.  We'll have updates as they become available.

Dead man's body found along Lake Erie shoreline in Ripley...
The body of a dead man has been found washed up onto a Lake Erie beach in the town of Ripley.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the area of Brockway and Barden Roads about 9 a.m. Thursday... and, found the body behind a nearby residence that had become lodged on the shore.  Deputies say the unidentified man appears to be light-skinned... is about 5'8" inches tall... has a beard and short hair with a receding hairline.  they add he has no visable tatoos, scars or obvious identifiable marks.  The investigation is ongoing... and, if anyone has any information they believe is relevant to the investigation... you are asked to contact the Sheriff's Office.


Juvenile, and his parents are arrested following traffic incident involving several E-Bikes...
A complaint of several juveniles on E-bikes disrupting traffic in Jamestown led to a vehicle chase... and, the arrest of one juvenile and his parents.  City police say they were called to the area of West Eighth and Cherry Streets shortly after 6 p.m. on a report of several juveniles operating the electric bikes... and, creating a hazard for passing motorists.  Officer's say they located one of the boys operating the bike near Washington and West Third Streets and attempted a vehicle stop.  However... they say the juvenile failed to comply and led police on a 20 minutes pursuit that ended in West Ellicott.  The juvenile was taken into custody... and, they later located the parents -- Justin and Monica Barr -- both 37 -- and both were arrested for endangering the welfare of a child for Failure to Exercise Control of a Minor.  Both were held pending arraignment... and, the juvenile was released to another guardian.  Further charges are pending.


Little Valley man arrested in Bemus Point for alleged rape...
A Cattaraugus County man has been arrested for allegedly raping a female victim in the village of Bemus Point in late July.  Sheriff's deputies say they began the investigation into the actions of 31 year-old Andrea Lucignano of Little Valley back on July 31.  During the investigation... investigators found that Lucignano had made unwanted sexual contact with the victim.  A Grand Jury warrant was signed for him Thursday on one count each of first and third-degree rape.  Lucignano was arrested later in the day... and, taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.


Hochul in north county Thursday for new hospital beam signing...
New York's top-elected official was in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area on Thursday to celebrate milestones for two area projects.  Governor Kathy Hochul's first stop was the site of the future Northern Chautauqua Hospital in Fredonia...  where hospital leadership, community stakeholders and several local officials gathered for a beam-signing ceremony.  Hochul says it marks a "big step toward delivering the hospital that this community has deserved..." and, that was the symbol of strength and stability.  She added that $124 million -- more than half of the funding -- for the $224-million project comes from the state.  Kaleida Health President and CEO Don Boyd called it a "historic and monumental" moment for the project.  Boyd says the new state-of-the-art hospital will be meaningful for patients... and patient care for generations to come.  Fredonia Mayor Mike Ferguson said the day is a win for all of Chautauqua County, adding that the new hospital represents growth, faith and belief in the community.  The hospital is on track to be completed in late 2029.  Later in the day... Hochul was in Dunkirk for a groundbreaking ceremony on the Homesteads at Dunkirk Landing housing project.


Babe Ruth World Series activities ramp up Friday leading into Saturday's start...
Pre-Babe Ruth World Series activities are underway through the first pitch Saturday morning in Jamestown.  That from Mayor Kim Ecklund... who is also Host President for this year's 13-year-old World Series at Diethrick Park.  Ecklund says the host committee has worked hard to get all eight-days of the tournament sponsored... so all the games can be attended -- free of charge -- by the public.  Ecklund adds you never know when you might see a future major leaguer.  Activities really pick up tonight with a public "Meet and Greet" involving the teams and coaches at the Northwest Arena beginning with team introductions at 6 p.m.

The excitement downtown is already underway with the 13 year-old Babe Ruth World Series set to begin tomorrow at Diethrick Park in Jamestown.  Eleven teams... including host Jamestown... are in town for the start of "pool play" Saturday through Wednesday.  There will be four games each day... with tomorrow's first game at 11 a.m. featuring Pacific Southwest Champion Mililani, Hi... against Ohio Valley Champion Janesville Youth from Wisc.  The Jamestown team will host Southwest winner Nederland, Tx. in the final game at 7 p.m.  We'll have that game here on WJTN thanks to sponsors including the Falconer Veterinary Clinic... NYS Attorney General's Office suing to shut-down "Healing for Heroes" in town of Ellery...
The New York State Attorney General's office has announced it's suing a purported veterans’ charity in Chautauqua County for allegedly defrauding donors for personal gain.  A.G. Letitia James says leaders for the group "Healing for Heroes" -- based in the Bemus Point area -- claimed to be proving free outdoor retreats for disabled veterans... but, only used the property for their own gain.  James says... since it's founding in 2024... the organization has only hosted four retreats, all of which served only board members and their friends and family -- essentially using the charity to fund their own vacations.  An investigation by the A.G.'s office found that the owners of Healing for Heroes’ 30-acre property... Board President Thomas Nelsen and Board Secretary and Treasurer Jennifer Nelsen... rented out the property on Airbnb on at least 32 different occasions in 2024 and 2025... claiming all proceeds would go to their charity.  Instead... James says the couple kept the just over $33,000 in proceeds from the rentals for themselves. The investigation also found that almost half of the nearly $100,000 donated to the organization was spent on property maintenance and improvements, such as a bathroom renovation and a new deck for the property, as well as personal shopping, meals, and other services for board members.  James says she is seeking a court order to dissolve the organization and distribute its assets to charities that actually honor Healing for Heroes’ stated mission.  The A.G. is also asking the court to bar the Nelsens from soliciting funds or serving in leadership positions for any other New York-based charity... and for the court to recoup damages from the Nelsens and impose civil penalties for violations of the FAIR Business Practices Act.


City man arrested following physical domestic incident that occured in front of five juveniles...
A man from Jamestown is accused of pinning a woman to the floor... and, biting her during a domestic incident on the city's northside Wednesday night.  Jamestown police were called to the scene about 10:30 p.m., and on arrival spoke with the victim... who told them that 29 year-old Oscar Allen, Jr., had held her down, preventing her from leaving.  Officers add that the incident occured in front of five juveniles who were at the home.  Police say Allen was not at the scene... but, was found a short distance away.  He was arrested for third-degree assault... second-degree unlawful imprisonment... second-degree harassment... and five counts of endangering the welfare of a child.  Allen was held pending arraignment.


Registered sex offender from Jamestown arrested on new, federal Child Porn charges...
A man from Jamestown who's already a registered sex offender has been arrested on new, federal child pornography charges.  U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo has announced that 42 year-old Eric Brown was taken into custody on a criminal complaint for distribution and possession of child pornography, which carry a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison... and, a maximum of 40 years.  Prosecutors say in February of 2025... state police began investigating Brown after receiving a report from the National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children.  The center said they had gotten a tip from Quora, a social question-and-answer platform... stating that files of suspected child porn were uploaded by an
account later traced to Brown.  This past June... investigators raided Brown’s Van Buren Street residence and seized two cell phones.  Prosecutors say a preliminary review of one of the cell phones determined that it contained suspected child porn.  Brown is a Level-1 Sex Offender in New York following a 2015 conviction.


Most officials, teams, now in Jamestown for start of 2026, 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series...
Most of the officials and teams have arrived in Jamestown for the upcoming, 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series at Diethrick Park.  That from Mayor Kim Ecklund... who is also Host President for this year's tournament... which begins this Sat., Aug. 15-Sat., Aug. 22.  Ecklund says there will be one more team than usual this year... totaling 11.  That includes an international team from Puerto Rico, along with an additional team from the New England region.  Ecklund adds that... thanks to generous sponsors... all 26 games will be open and free to the public.  Activities really pick up on Friday night with a public "Meet and Greet" involving the teams and coaches at the Northwest Arena beginning with team introductions at 6 p.m.  There will also be some fun activities on tap... including bumper car rides in the arena... and, cornhole competition outside.  Ecklund says the games begin with four each day during pool play on Saturday through Wednesday... after that the championship round begins Thursday with single-elimination games through Championship Sat. Aug. 22. 


City man arrested for allegedly operating three-wheel golf cart while under the influence of drugs...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs after his three-wheel golf cart was stopped by police on the city's eastside.  Jamestown officers say they stopped 55 year-old Kevin Newby in the area of Winsor and East Sixth Streets about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for equipment violations. Officers say they found that Newby was driving the golf cart while impaired by drugs.  He was taken into custody on charges of DWAI-Drugs... second-degree unauthorized use... having an unregistered motor vehicle.... an uninspected vehicle... and operating without a license.  He was issued an appearance ticket for City Court.

Two former Chautauqua County Dept. of Mental Hygiene and Social Services charged in connection with theft-fraud totaling more than $7-million...
Two former employees of the Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services have been charged following an investigation into several million dollars worth of welfare fraud.  County Executive P.J. Wendel says the county's Program Integrity Unit several months ago spotted a "red flag" in the DSS Program between 2020 and 2025... and, found about $7.4-million was used -- "fraudulently and inappropriately."  Wendel says a report was made to the PIU, and investigated.  Once the evidence was found... he says it was turned over to the District Attorney's Office.  Officials say some of the money has been recovered.  The major suspect has now been identified as 38 year-old Amber Tibbetts of Jamestown... a former DSS Clerk.  Director of Mental Hygiene and Social Services Carmelo Hernandez further explained that the "big red flag" was someone in the county.  First Assistant DA Tom Rankin called the case troubling... and, says Tibbetts faces 20 counts... including six counts each of first-degree tampering with public records... second-degree forgery... and, four counts of second-degree identity theft.  Rankin says the second person charged... a case worker... faces one count of fifth-degree welfare fraud and has been referred to a local court.


Lakewood man arrested for allegedly having sex with two girls -- under 13 years of age -- in town of Portland... 
A man from Lakewood has been arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with two girls under the age of 13 in the town of Portland.  Sheriff's officers say they've formally charged 29 year-old Alex Rosage with first-degree rape... and, forcible touching in connection with the July 18 incident.  Rosage was taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Office Road patrol and taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.  Rosage will appear at a later date in Portland Town Court.  The Sheriff's Office says it "remains committed to protecting the children of our community and ensuring those who endanger their safety are held accountable.  We will continue to thoroughly investigate allegations involving the abuse or exploitation of children and work diligently to provide a safe environment for all children in Chautauqua County."


City teen arrested in Busti after crashing truck he allegedly stole Tuesday...
A Jamestown teen has been arrested for allegedly stealing a truck in the town of Busti... and, crashing it into a ditch Tuesday morning.  Lakewood-Busti police say they were called to the scene on the Busti-Sugar Grove Rd. just before 6:30 a.m., and, found the truck crashed into the ditch.  Officers say they found the unidentified 18 year-old nearby... who appeared to be drunk.  Police say they also determined the truck had been stolen from a town of Busti resident.  The teenager was arrested on several charges including:  DWI... Aggravated DWI for having a blood alcohol content of .18 or higher... fourth-degree grand larceny... fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property... fourth-degree criminal mischief... unregistered motor vehicle... and, unlicensed operation.  The teen was issued appearance tickets for Busti Town Court.

Ecklund says second-quarter sales tax were up... but, not as much as hoped...
A pair of really good months for sales tax revenues during the second-quarter of this year in the city of Jamestown helped put that total well-over budget.  However... Mayor Kim Ecklund was hoping for a bigger amount to help offset a sluggish first-quarter.  Ecklund told the City Council that the amount brought in exceeded projections by nearly $130,000.  She says City Comptroller Ericka Thomas noted that both April and May were up... but, June was down.  However... Ecklund says... with local events taking place in July... and, more in August... city officials are hoping for a better third-quarter.  Among those events for August include the just recently concluded Lucille Ball Comedy Festival... and, the upcoming 13 year-old Babe Ruth World Series.  Series officials and teams have begun arriving in Jamestown... and, the games begin at Diethrick Park this Sat., Aug. 15.


City Council committees approve reciept of $20,000 NYS Discovery Grant for JPD...
Two Jamestown City Council committees have approved receipt of a $20,000 state grant to upgrade the police department's evidence unit.  The "sub-award" is through the New York State Discovery Grant program... and, administered by the Chautauqua County District Attorney's Office.  Public Safety Committee Chairman Jeremy Endquist says Chief Scott Forster described what the grant will be used for... noting that the 10 items include tables, and supplies and technical items.  The Evidence Room is part of the JPD Detective Bureau.  In addition to the Public Safety Committee... the council's Finance Committee also approved receiving the award.  There will be no cost to the city for the upgrades.  The full council will act on the resolution at it's August voting session.

Republican appointee Bryan Bigelow replaces the late Tony Dolce on City Council...
A newly-appointed member of the Jamestown City Council attended his first meeting during Monday night's Council work session.  Republican Bryan Bigelow was recently approved by city lawmakers to fill the unexpired term of late Second-Ward Councilman Tony Dolce... who passed away suddently back on July 18.  According to state election law... Mayor Kim Ecklund was required to make the appointment within 60 days of the vacancy.  The candidate must be from the same party, and same election district as the previous council member.  In addition... Bigelow is a 25-year resident of Ward-2... and, is known in the city as a long-time midget football coach.  He has submitted petitions to run in a special election in November against Democrat-endorsed candidate Jason Sample.  Sample is a former WJTN news and sports announcer... and, currently works for the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency.  


Both Bigelow and Sample announce their candidacies for Nov. on-line...
Both Bryan Bigelow and Jason Sample put out Facebook statements about their decisions to run for the Ward-2 seat... and, paid homage to the late Tony Dolce.  Bigelow said the loss of Dolce -- "will be felt by many... He was known for his intellect, his passion, and his unwavering commitment to public service.  As a Northside resident for the past 25 years, I often saw Tony throughout the neighborhood, and our paths frequently crossed through the youth sports programs we were both fortunate to be involved in.  One of the qualities I admired most about Tony was his willingness to stop, listen, and truly hear the concerns of Ward 2 residents."  He says he hopes to continue that line of service.

Sample also confirmed that he was asked to run... and, had accepted the Democrat  endorsement run in November's special election to fill Dolce's seat.  In his statement... Sample said -- "Like so many others, I had great respect for Tony.  He was an outstanding public servant and a man of even greater integrity and character.  He was irreplaceable."  Sample says it was a very difficult decision... but, in the end... he felt that the voters in Ward-2 should be given a choice of who to vote for.


House fire in Silver Creek caused by malfunctioning lithium-ion battery...
A malfunctioning litium-ion battery is the apparent cause of an early morning house fire in the north county village of Silver Creek.  Sheriff's officers say Silver Creek and several other mutual aid departments responded to the scene at 330 Central Avenue shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday.  Once the blaze was put out... fire investigators were called in and found that a problem with the battery pack triggered the flames.  The fire was ruled as accidental.


Wendel says county will try again to regain EAS designation...
It was another setback to efforts to get commercial air service back to the Chautauqua County Airport near Jamestown.  However... the effort to get Essential Air Service back to the facility isn't over -- yet.  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel... who feels the U.S. Department of Transporation did not fully consider all the numbers presented by the county in it's most recent application... which he says show the right number of "catchments" in the region -- about 1,500 per day.  Wendel noted that at one time... commercial air service was not subsidized at the Jamestown Airport.  However... the Lakewood Republican says he was told during a recent session of the National Association of Counties organization that money is available from the U.S. DOT.  However... Wendel says if they aren't able to regain EAS status for the Jamestown Airport... they will look to continue in the direction of "General Aviation."  He adds there may also be the possibility of from funding from New York state to help out.  Wendel made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Glenora Radio Network stations.


City man arrested for DWI after his motorcycle crashes into parked car...
A man from Jamestown is accused of drunk driving after his motorcycle crashed into a parked car on the city's southside last weekend.  Jamestown police say they were called to the scene at Newland Avenue and Sampson Street shortly before 4 a.m. last Saturday.  Officers say the motorcycle... operated by 43 year-old Brian Erickson... had hit the parked vehicle... and, they later found he was under the influence of alcohol.  They also found that Erickson had been convicted of DWI three other times in the past 10 years.  He was arrested for Felony DWI... Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle... and, multiple traffic violations.  Erickson was held pending arraignment.


Bills to address concerns over new stadium after Blue and Red scrimage...

The Buffalo Bills are responding to criticism over various issues at their new stadium — including partially obstructed sightline concerns -- by addressing them on a case-by-case basis, the team announced late Monday.  The criticism stems from fans getting their first full experience inside the $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium during the Bills annual Blue and Red practice on Saturday night. Though the Bills said a majority of the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, a few complaints arose, which team president Pete Guelli termed as coming from less than 1% of the personal seat licensing holders.  One of the larger concerns were seats with obstructed views, with several photos emerging on social media.

Jamestown couple arrested for allowing 3 year-old and three dogs to live in deplorable and unsafe conditions...
Two city residents have been arrested for allegedly allowing their 3-year-old child and three dogs live in deplorable conditions.  Jamestown police were called to assist the Department of Development about 3 p.m. last Friday with an investigation on the city's westside.  Officers say they found the 3-year-old living in deplorable and hazardous conditions... along with the three dogs which appeared malnourished... and, were kept without access to food or water.  Animal Control took the three dogs... and, arrangements were made to ensure the child's safety.  Police arrested 32 year-old Amber Peru and 33-year-old David Burkhart III on one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and three counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals -- Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance.  Police say Burkhart was also charged with one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Both were held pending arraignment.


City woman arrested after 1 year-old found wandering on busy street...
A woman from Jamestown has been arrested for allegedly letting a one-year-old child she was babysitting wander on a busy city street last weekend.  Jamestown police say they were called to make a "well-being check" on a toddler wandering on Washington Street shortly before 3:30 p.m. last Saturday.  After safely retriving the child... officers investigated and determined that the sitter... 24 year-old Haily Welch... had left the child outside and unattended during that time.  While being taken into custody... Welch resisted... but, was arrested following a brief struggle.  She was processed and issued an appearance ticket for endangering the welfare of a child... and, resisting arrest. 


Fire destroys vacant town of Arkwright trailer...
Flames destroyed a vacant trailer in the Town of Arkwright Sunday afternoon.  Firefighters from several area departments were called to the fully involved structure fire at 2795 Ball Rd. shortly after 1:45 p.m.  Crews from Cassadaga, Forestville, Fredonia, Stockton, Bay Creek, Sinclairville and Stockton responded, as well as the Sheriff's Office and County Emergency Services.  Forestville firefighters say Bay Creek crews confirmed an exposure about 10 feet away, and Cassadaga crews stopped the fire on that exposure.  Forestville officials add that only defensive operations were made due to the trailer being fully engulfed and partially on the ground.  The fire was ruled accidental... and, no injuries were reported. 


Attendance good for Saturday night's finale for the 81st Gerry Rodeo...
The Gerry Rodeo came to a somewhat wet conclusion last Saturday night after a rainstorm hit the area shortly after the start of the competition.  While a number of people were seen leaving the Rodeo grounds... a large crowd remained for the rest of the show.  On Friday... the rain stopped earlier... and, long-time Rodeo publicist Paul Cooley reported a full-house on hand for their third night.  Rodeo Chairman Tom Atwell says Saturday night was their biggest crowd in the stands by far.  Atwell said people are wet, but, they're enjoying it."  He says they dodged the raindrops a few times over the four-day event... and, that caused attendance to be a little down this year.  An added feature this year was the return of Paul Cooley... who had been recouperating from a brief illness at his daughter's home in Virginia in recent weeks... and, Atwell says he's still writing the rodeo press releases.  This was the rodeo's 81st year.


Jamestown man gets time served on drug conviction...
Another city man has been sentenced to time serviced -- nearly 6-years -- in federal prison for trafficking three types of illegal narcotics.  U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo says 33 year-old Jun Martinez... who was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent
to distribute, and to distribute, 100 grams or more of acetyl fentanyl; 400 grams or more of
fentanyl; 50 grams or more of methamphetamine; and 500 grams or more of cocaine, was
sentenced the approximately 70 months served by U.S. District Judge John Sinatra, Jr.  During the conspiracy... prosecutors say Martinez received several large packages of cocaine, meth, and heroin via mail from an out of state source.  He also provided large quantities of crystal meth and heroin/fentanyl to an individual known to law enforcement, who then sold the drugs to others for profit.  The individual then provided more money to Martinez for more narcotics.  During a trip in September 2020 to acquire more narcotics... Martinez’s vehicle was stopped by an Illinois State Police Trooper.  A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of approximately nearly 9,600 grams of meth... more than 3,100 grams of fentanyl... more than 2,200 grams of cocaine, and marijuana products.  Police later raided Martinez’s Wescott Street home... and, found more drugs, paraphernalia... a drug ledger and about $62,000 in cash.


Buffalo man arrested in Jamestown drug bust...
A man from Buffalo accused of selling illegal drugs in Jamestown has now been arrested following a local investigation.  Sheriff's officers say their narcotics investigators... along with those from Jamestown... raided the lower apartment at 312 East Sixth St. about 1:30 p.m. last Thursday.  They found 32 year-old Laquil Hilson inside... and, a search led to seizure of 31.4-grams of methamphetamine, 23.4-grams of crack cocaine... nearly 12-grams of fentanyl and $2,364 in cash.  Deputies arrested Hilson on three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  He was jailed pending arraignment in City Court.

City man arrested on drug-related charges following raid on Jamestown's northside Thursday...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested on multiple-drug related charges following a raid on a northside home Thursday morning.  Sheriff's officers say their narcotics investigators... and, those from Jamestown police... executed a search warrant at 1107 North Main St. shortly after 6 a.m. with the help of the JPD SWAT Team.  Inside... they located 44 year-old Joel Rosario-Negron... and seized 24.7 grams of crack cocaine... scales and packaging material used for drug trafficking... and, $1,400 in cash.  Police say Rosario-Negron was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, one cout of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  Officers say Rosario-Negron was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.  If you have any information on suspicious or narcotics related activity in your area... you're asked to call the Sheriff's Office Narcotics Investigators Tip line at either 1-800-344-8702 or 664-2420.. or the JPD Tip line at 483-8477.


Two 18 year-olds arrested on drug and weapon's possession charges a short time later in Jamestown...
A short time later... city police and members of the JPD SWAT team raided a home on Jamestown's eastside... and, arrested two 18 year-olds there.  Police executed a search warrant at 352 Falconer St. just after 6:30 a.m., and inside found Alexis Morales-DeJesus... and, Niderah Manuel... along with three juveniles.  Once the residence was secured... officers say detectives searched and found two revolver style handguns, a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a quantity of fentanyl, digital scales, packaging materials and a quantity of cash.  Police charged both Morales-DeJesus and Manuel with two counts each of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... three counts each of criminal possession of a firearm... third and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.... and, two counts of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  Morales-DeJesus was also charged with second-degree obstruction for trying to run back into the home while the SWAT Team was actively clearing the residence.  Morales-DeJesus was arraigned in city court... and, taken to the county jail on $75,000 bail and Manuel was also jailed on $10,000 bail.  The Sheriff's Department assisted in the drug bust.


Democrat challenger in 23rd Congressional race draws crowd of better than 120 in Jamestown...
The Democrat challenger in the race for the 23rd Congressional District is vowing to hold 100 town hall meetings across the district until Election Day.  And... he hosted his first one in Jamestown last night.  An overflow crowd of more than 120 was on hand to hear from Olean's Aaron Gies at the Prendergast Library.  Gies was aware that incumbant Republican Nick Langworthy was speaking Thursday to the CHQ Chamber of Commerce...but, was only talking about the "positives..." like Chautauqua County losing 14,000 jobs in the past 20 years... the loss of major contract for local grape growers... and, the closing of five nursing homes in the district.  One of the big reason's Gies says he's running for office is because rural communities in places like the Southern Tier are being left behind.  He spoke for about 10 minutes before opening up the floor to questions.  Gies says there are still good people in Congress... but, says money has corrupted the system.


Langworthy speaks earlier to CHQ Chamber Luncheon...
Local Congressman Nick Langworthy touted a wide-range of legislation he says will help local manufacturers regain their competitive edge.  The Buffalo-area Republican spoke during the CHQ Chamber for the first time in two years during the organization's "State of NY-23" event in Jamestown.  The second-term representative spoke about how the "Big Beautiful Bill" will help reverse the curse of manufacturing losses through the tax code... which he says will allow businesses can invest in new machinery and equipment and others going forward.  Langworthy noted that manufacturing is one of the four pillars that make up Chautauqua County's economy.  The other three are agriculture... tourism and small business... and, he believes there are opportunities to strengthen each one.  However... Langworthy says some of the biggest impediments to growth in the 23rd District is state legislation regarding energy, taxes, and regulations. 


Babe Ruth World Series announces all days of the tournament will have free admission, as well as teams coming from each region...
The public will be able to enjoy all of the 20-plus games of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series games in Jamestown for free this year.  That from this year's Host President and Public Relations Division head Kim Ecklund... who says the two remaining days that were open have now been sponsored.  In a press release... Ecklund says "thanks to the on-going support of the community and our sponsors we are pleased to announce that all games are again free general admittance to the public."  Ecklund says this year's teams include: the host Jamestown team... along with international representative Puerto Rico.  The others include: Southeast Regional Champion Tallahassee-Leon from Florida... Southwest Regional winner Mid-County from Nederland, TX... Ohio Valley winner Janesville Youth from Wisconsin.  Bethel, Conn. will represent the New England Region... along with Greater Westfield, Mass.  Others are Atlantic Shore from Egg Harbor Township, NJ from the Mid-Atlantic Region... Miliani, Hawaii from the Pacific Southwest... and, Woodland, WA. representing the Pacific Northwest.  Ecklulnd adds that the Host Committee is also looking for volunteer help during the week from Aug. 12-22... and, National Anthem singers.  Games begin on Saturday, Aug. 15.  


Pierre Chagnon announced as recipient of this year's John D. Hamilton Community Service Award...
The chairman of the Chautauqua County Legislature has been selected as this year's recipient of the 2026 John D. Hamilton Community Service Award.  The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation... which presents the award each year... says Bemus Point's Pierre Chagnon will receive this year's award on Fri., Sept. 18th.  The award... which is in it's 32nd year... recognizes a person whose -- "dedication, leadership, and service have strengthened community spirit and enhanced the quality of life throughout the Chautauqua region.  The award honors the legacy of John D. Hamilton, whose lifelong commitment to civic leadership continues to inspire generations of volunteers."

Pair of men from Jamestown arrested in town of Carroll on firearms charges...
Two men from Jamestown are accused of shooting off handguns during an incident in the town of Carroll last weekend.  Town Police say they were called to an address on Page Road last Sunday for a complaint of firearms being discharged too close to a home.  On arrival... officers say they found 20 year-old Jonathan Marrero-Rosario... and, 23 year-old Joshua Tolliver to each be illegally possessing handguns without a valid state pistol permit.  They add that further investigation found that one of the handguns was reported stolen.  All of the handgun magazines in their possession also exceeded the legal capacity requirements in New York state.  Both men were arrested for discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling... second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... four counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon... second-degree criminal use of a firearm... and, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.  Both were taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.


Fredonia woman arrested for alleged theft of more than $11,000 in patient funds from town of Dunkirk nursing facility...
A months-long investigation into more than $11,000 in stolen patient funds at a north county nursing facility has led to the arrest of a Fredonia woman.  Sheriff's officers say investigators responded to a complaint of the theft of patient funds from a town of Dunkirk facility.  Deputies have now charged 45 year-old Stacy Fadale with third-degree grand larceny... and, first-degree falsifying business records.  It's alleged that over the course of several years... Fadale had stolen the money from multiple patients at the unnamed facility.  She also allegedly destroyed records to cover up the larcenies.  Fadale turned herself into the Chautauqua County Jail after a warrant was issued from Dunkirk Town Court Wed. morning. 


Gerry Rodeo begins it's four-night run tonight at grounds off Route 60...
A busy mid and late week gets underway tonight in the Jamestown-area with the start of the 81st annual Gerry Rodeo.  Performances each night through Saturday start at 8 p.m. at the Rodeo Grounds off Route 60... and, Rodeo President Tom Atwell says they're looking forward to again hosting this year.  New this year... says Atwell... is Rodeo Clown and entertainer Preston Broxson of Louisiana... who is a high school ag teacher.  He will bring one of two props with him -- a car, or a camel.  Atwell says it wasn't known a few days ago which it would be.  He says Announcer Greg Simas is back again... and, has been rodeo announcer the past 15-plus years.  The stock contractor is against Painted Pony from Lake Luzurne, NY.  In addition to the rodeo performances... the Gerry Fire Department will also be serving it's traditional Beef Barbecue dinners... beginning at 5 p.m. each night.  For more information on tickets and combo packages... go on-line to gerryrodeo.org.


Tickets remain for most shows at upcoming Lucille Ball Comedy Festival...
Some tickets still remain for the three headliner shows for this weekend's Lucille Ball Comedy Festival in Jamestown put on by the National Comedy Center.  That from Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson... who says only a small number remain for Thursday night's kick-off show at the Northwest Arena... featuring Comedy legend, Jerry Seinfeld... who will be performing beginning at 7 p.m.  The annual Late Night Comedy Showcase is set for Friday night at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts at 7 p.m., and, Gunderson says there are still some tickets available for that.  Another big name performing at the festival will be Bert Kreischer on Saturday night at the arena at 7 p.m.  Gunderson says Kreischer's big MO is "fun."  The final headliner is Sunday night when "Late Night with Seth Meyers" host Seth Meyers puts on his stand-up routine... which she says is "very relatible" -- especially to parents.  For more information on all the events during the Comedy Festival... go on-line to ComedyFestival.org.


Second "Speeding Crackdown" underway in NYS through Aug. 9...
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the start of this year's second, weeklong Speeding Crackdown in New York.  Hochul says State Police and local law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols through Aug. 9 to crackdown on speeding.  The governor says more than 14-thousand tickets were issued during the first, weeklong program back in early June.  The program is being sponsored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to curb speeding... and, try to prevent avoidable crashes caused by unsafe speed.  Hochul says "these enforcement campaigns are crucial, as speeding continues to be a leading cause of fatal crashes each year in New York State."  She urges motorists to follow the speed limit... avoid distractions and never drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol.


NYRA and Churchill Downs, Inc announce new championship series to include Saratoga Race Course...
The New York Racing Association and Churchill Downs, Inc. have announced a six-race championship series over a five-month span that includes the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.  The series is set to begin next year... and, will include a $5-million prize pool.  The series would feature the Triple Crown races at Churchill Downs... the Preakness... and Belmont Stakes.  But... it would also include the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs in July... and the Jim Dandy and the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course later in the summer.  There would also be a championship race at Churchill Downs in September ahead of the Breeders' Cup in the fall, which in 2027 is set to take place at Belmont Park.

JPD urges public to be vigilant in wake of older model Kia thefts in city...
Jamestown police officials believe juveniles are the primary suspects in a recent rash of vehicle thefts involving mainly older model Kia's in the city.  That from Police Chief Scott Forester and Deputy Chief Adam McKinley... who put out a warning to city residents on Facebook last Friday about "numerous thefts" during the overnight hours across the city.  McKinley says videos on social media are often to blame... because there are videos there that instruct people on how to steal Kias... or other cars in general.  He says the cars are either being found, abandoned, somewhere else... or wrecked.  Police investigators say the suspects are breaking a window on the vehicle and tampering with the ignition to start and drive it.  Chief Forester says the best way to avoid the car being stolen is to keep it out of sight... or in a well-lit area.  He says that goes for any kind of car you may have.  He says if you can keep the car in a garage that's a big help.  Otherwise, he says lock-up your vehicle and don't leave the keys, or other valuables in it.  If you see suspicious individuals, or activities or car alarms going off please call 911. 


City man to spend 6-years in state prison on drug convictions...
A man from Jamestown will spend the next six-years in state prison for his conviction on drug-related charges.  Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt says 33 year-old Jamal Jackson received the sentence... along with five-years post-release supervision... from County Court Judge David Foley Monday.  Schmidt says Jackson had been convicted of fourth-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  In December of 2024... Schmidt says Jamestown police stopped a vehicle that Jackson was a passenger in... and, during the stop... they found him in possession of a quantity of methamphetamine.  About a month later... he says Jackson was arrested again by city police following a traffic stop for later being found with more than half-a-gram of meth.  Schmidt says Jackson pled guilty to guilty to both charges last May.  He was sentenced as a violent predicate felon for having multiple convictions within a certain period of time.  Schmidt thanked JPD for it's hard work on both cases.


Dunkirk fire crews make quick work of fire in Hot Water tank in Coburn Block building...
No injuries were reported after a hot water tank caught on fire inside a downtown Dunkirk building Sunday morning.  City Fire Chief Nick Barter says crews responded to an automatic fire alarm activation at about 8 a.m. at 4 West 2nd St. --  which is part of the Coburn Block.  On arrival... firefighters found the alarm and also saw smoke coming from the first floor in the back of 131 Central Ave.  Barter says they found a hot water tank on fire in the basement and quickly put out the flames.  The fire caused minor damage, and crews remained on scene for about one hour to clear smoke from the multi-occupant building.


Dunkirk assessor files lawsuit against the city...
Dunkirk City Assessor Erica Munson is suing the north county city.  The lawsuit was filed this past week in Chautauqua County Supreme Court... and, alleges that the city unlawfully denied Munson her election to receive a cash payout in lieu of her health insurance coverage for the 2026 calendar year.  That was authorized under a local law enacted in 1992.  Munson says the city's determination should be annulled because -- "it was made in violation of unlawful procedure, is affected by an error of law, and is arbitrary and capricious."  In April, City attorney Elliot Raimondo said in a letter to Munson that she is ineligible for the cash payout because -- "clear evidence shows that you are participating in the City health insurance plan and receiving benefits from such."

Three women from Jamestown arrested after three children are found living in deplorable conditions...
Three city women have been arrested after allegedly allowing three children to live in deplorable conditions on Jamestown's southside.  City police say a patrol was in the area shortly before 7 p.m. last Friday... and spotted an unattended toddler leaving a building and going onto a busy road.  Officers say they picked up the child... who was very dirty and only wearing a diaper.  Police investigated and found the child lived in an apartment with two other children and the three adults.  Officers arrested 33 year-old Heidi Lindberg... 26 year-old Megan Dorman... and, 51 year-old Christina Dorman.  All three were charged with three counts each of endangering the welfare of a child.  They were held pending arraignment... and, the children were placed into the care of a family member away from the scene. 


Man from Jamestown arrested for failing to register -- for five-years -- as a sex offender...
A city man who moved to Jamestown from Pennsylvania five years ago has been arrested for failing to register as a sex offender.  City police say they were made aware last Friday that 33 year-old Robert Jones had failed to register with New York state after moving here from Pennsylvania in 2021.  Jones was required to register within 10 days of moving into New York.  Officers found him at a northside address... and, he was arrested without incident for the violation of New York Corrections Law... a Class-E Felony.  He was taken to the city jail pending arraignment. 


Second-annual "CHQ History Expo" a big success at new location in Mayville...
With the theme of "America 250" and a bigger program this year... the second-ever CHQ History Expo was a big success.  Those are the feelings of Chautauqua County Historian Norman Carlson... who was lead organizer of the event at the former Mayville High School.  Carlson says they accomplished most of their objectives... including answering questions about the history of local communities.  One of those was about the formation and settlement dates for the town of Portland.  Most of the exhibitors were pleased with the turn-out.  In fact... Kristan McMahon with the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown said -- with an hour to go -- she was already out of their newsletters.  McMahon says there were "definately more people" attending this year's program.  The railroad has played a big part of the county's history... and, Rail Advocate Kenneth Springirth of Erie, Pa. was on hand to talk about it... and, show the many books he's written about it.  There were several historic lectures... and, even horse-drawn carriage rides during the History Expo.


Town of Chautauqua woman arrested for criminal mischief incident...
A woman from the town of Chautauqua has been arrested for allegedly damaging another person's property during a weekend incident.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to an unidentified location in the town about 9 p.m. last Friday.  Deputies say their investigation showed that 37 year-old Stephanie Textor had caused the damage... which exceeded $250.  With that... she was arrested for third-degree criminal mischief.  Textor was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.


City man faces charges in alleged DWAI accident more than a week ago...
A man from Jamestown faces charges... including driving while under the influence... following an accident on the city's westside just over a week ago.  Jamestown police were called to the scene at West Sixth and Clinton Streets shortly after 10 a.m. on Friday, July 24 for a reported personal injury crash.  Officers determined that one of the drivers involved... 36 year-old Demeatrice Maddox... while driving while under the influence of drugs.  He was taken to the city jail without incident on one charge of DWAI-Drugs.. along with other traffick tickets.  After being processed... Maddox was released with an appearance ticket for City Court.

JPD warning residents about Kia's being stolen...
City police are warning residents of numerous Kia vehicles being stolen during the overnight hours recently across Jamestown.  Investigators say the suspects are breaking a window on the vehicle and tampering with the ignition to start, and drive it.  Patrol and detectives say they are diligently working to identify and locate the suspects.  If you own a Kia vehicle and have the ability to park it in a garage... or a well-lit busy area... they are suggesting you do so.  Do not leave valuables or keys in any vehicle.  If you see suspicious individuals, or activities or car alarms going off please call 911.
