Jamestown man arrested on drug and weapons charges after e-bike and foot pursuit in Brooklyn Square area...
A city man known to police has been arrested after allegedly being found in possession of drugs and a loaded firearm following an E-bike pursuit.  Jamestown police say they spotted 20 year-old Samuel Arrington, Jr. riding the e-bike on the sidewalk on Main Street just after Noon yesterday... a violation of the City Code.  Officers say they tried to stop Arrington... but, he ignored police and continued south on Main. The pursuit continued through Brooklyn Square and to the city's westside where he fled on foot.  He was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit and struggle.  Police say they found Arrington in possession of the loaded gun with a high-capacity magazine... 51.4 grams of fentanyl, and a digital scale.  Police say Arrington does not have a pistol permit and cannot legally possess the firearm.  He was arrested on charges including:  two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia... and, second and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Arrington was taken to the county jail on $1,000 cash bail.

Three arrested following Dunkirk drug bust...
Three people have been arrested following a drug bust in the city of Dunkirk in which a large amount of methamphetamine was found.  Sheriff's officers say they and narcotics investigators from their department and Dunkirk executed a search warrant at 18 West Beach Road just after 5 p.m. Thursday.  Police found 32 year-old Alexiss Matthews and 45 year-old Peter Galardo inside... along with nearly 173-grams of meth... 6.58 grams of fentanyl... 34.8 grams of psilocybin mushrooms... scales and packaging material used for drug sales and $535 in cash.  Matthews is charged with second, third, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  Galardo was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Deputies say the owner of the residence... Joshua Latona... was charged with second-degree criminal nuisance.  Officers say Latona and Galardo were both released with appearance tickets for Dunkirk City Court.  Matthews was held pending arraignment in Dunkirk City Court.  Anyone with information about suspicious or drug-related activity in their area to contact the Sheriff's Office tip line at 1-800-344-8702... or 664-2420.

City woman arrested for aggravated harassment following northside domestic...
A woman from Jamestown has been arrrested for allegedly sending threatening messages to another person during a domestic incident.  City police say they were called to a northside residence about 6:30 a.m. Thursday for the reported dispute.  Officers determined that 34 year-old Chelsea Coulter had used an electronic device to send the threatening messages.  They also found that Coutler was violating a valid Order of Protection the victim has against her.  Coulter was taken into custody on one count each of second-degree aggravated harassment... and, first-degree criminal contempt.  She was held pending arraignment.

Quattrone critical of NYS move to end 287(g) agreements between local police agencies and ICE...
Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone feels last week's directive to a dozen law enforcement agencies in New York to end their 287(g) agreements with ICE goes too far.  Quattrone spoke about the letters that Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James sent to those departments... the first enforcement action under the Attorney General's new Office of Immigrant Trust.  He says the New York State Sheriffs' Association sees that action as being "an overreach" in that that law circumvents what the law allows local agencies to do.  Three of the agencies that received letters are in the western Southern Tier... but, none have any impact on Chautauqua County police agencies.  Quattrone says the county will continue to work with its federal partners in making local communities safer... and, that includes arresting those people who have judicial warrants for their arrest... and those who are commiting crimes.  The enforcement action by OAG is to ensure compliance with the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, which bans local law enforcement agencies in New York from participating in any formal or informal 287(g) agreement and using correctional facilities, juvenile detention facilities, and facilities for youth to house federal civil immigration detainees.

"America 250" is theme for this year's second annual Chautauqua County History Expo...
"America 250" will be the theme of this year's second-annual CHQ History Expo to be held this Sunday in Mayville.  The effort is again being headed up by Chautauqua County Historian Norman Carlson... who says the program will begin with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Town of Chautauqua Community Municipal Building... the former Mayville High School.  Carlson says the idea is to bring together local municipal historians... along with local geneological... and lineage societies will also be part of the festivities.  He says this year's expo is about more than looking back... "it's about understanding how Chautauqua County fits into the broader American story as we celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary."  Carlson says they'll have reinactors... lectures... and representatives from various historical artifacts, such as the Bemus Point-Stow Ferry.  Half-a-dozen Chautauqua County communities were named after signers of the Declaration of Independence and that will be chronicaled as well.  The History Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the former Mayville School... and, admission and parking will be free.
 

Matar convicted on all counts in federal terrorism trial...
A New Jersey man has been convicted of federal terrorism charges in the 2022 stabbing of Salman Rushdie at Chautauqua Institution.  A jury Wednesday found 28 year-old Hadi Matar guilty of all the charges against him, including engaging in an act of trans-national terrorism.  Matar is already serving a 25-year New York state prison sentence on an attempted murder conviction in the August 2022 attack on the Chautauqua Amphitheater stage.  The federal conviction carries a potential life sentence.  Rushdie, who was about to speak on writers’ safety, was slashed 15 times in front of a stunned audience.  He was gravely wounded and lost the sight in his right eye.  Prosecutors asserted that Matar was motivated by the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ’s 1989 call for Rushdie’s death because of Rushdie's book "The Satanic Verses."  Defense lawyer Ned Barone countered that the government had no proof of what was in Matar’s head.

Man from Falconer arrested for allegedly menacing others with a Hatchet...
A Falconer man is charged with two felonies after allegedly waving a hatchet and threatening to burn an apartment earlier this month.  Ellicott Town Police say they responded to a disorderly person call back on July 21... and arrested 45 year-old Michael Newman.  Officers say Newman waved the hatchet... and, poured lighter fluid on the floor while threatening to burn down the apartment and building.  Newman was arrested for first-degree menacing with a weapon... and, second-degree harassment.  He was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.

The Local Planning Committee that will decide which projects to include from the city of Jamestown's second Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant has met for the first time.  The committee... which is made up of a cross-section of business people... heads of local non-profits... and, the CHQ Chamber met at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts Wednesday morning.  Mayor Kim Ecklund... who co-chairs the committee... welcomed everyone and thanked those on the panel for being part of the process.  Ecklund refers to this as "DRI 2.0," and it's theme is "Core to Shore" and signifies the importance of tying in downtown redevelopment with the Chadakoin River.  The Western New York Regional Economic Development Council's Laura Smith is the other co-chair.  Western New York DRI Project Manager Ben Gunnell says the committee will decide which of the 24 project proposals will be in the final DRI.  Once the planning process is completed... Gunnell says they will have identified a slate of $12-million to $15-million for the state to review and make final choices on for the available $9.7-million.  Ecklund says the city's DRI builds on the city's first award about 10 years ago... and, several more public meetings will be scheduled.

Wendel says he supports moratorium on Data Centers in NYS until questions about them are answered...
The growing concern surrounding data centers was a major topic of discussion during a recent gathering of elected and appointed officials from across the country.  Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel, who attended the National Association of Counties' Annual Conference and Expo earlier this month, says the big concern officials spoke about during the four-day conference was about the push to get everyone to "jump on board."  Wendel says some leaders are saying "you're a fool if you're not taking one... and, look at the money available."  In addition to high water and electric usage, he questions what happens to them once their outdated.  Wendel says there are many questions that need to be answered about data centers.  He says what's most disappointing is that money is being "dangled" in front of people in rural counties who need it... in places like Clinton, Jefferson and Chautauqua Counties.  Wendel... who is one of two representatives from New York on the NACo Board of Directors, says it's important that our county has a voice on that matter.  The Lakewood Republican adds that he "100%" supports New York Governor Kathy Hochul's one-year moratorium on large-scale data centers in the state.

Thomas says early sales tax figures for second-quarter look good, but June could change thing; city's independent audit now underway...
After a difficult first-quarter of 2026 for the city of Jamestown... early sales tax figures are pointing to a better second-quarter.  That from City Comptroller Ericka Thomas... who is still waiting for final figures for April through June.  However... for the first two months of the second quarter... Thomas says the numbers look good.  She recently reported to the City Council... telling them that April and May were both above 2025 at those times.  She says April was by just over 14%... while May was about 5%.  However... Thomas says she's expecting a correction in the month of June that may produce a final increase of 5% in that revenue line.  She also reported that the city's third-party auditing firm, Drescher and Malecki, is beginning work on the 2025 city audit and will be in house for about three weeks.  Drescher and Malecki have done the city's third-party audits the past few years.

Man from Busti arrested for allegedly threatening neighbor and neighbor's pets...
A man from the town of Busti has been arrested after allegedly threatening to kill a neighbor's pets and the people living there.  Lakewood-Busti Police were called to a Big Tree Road home last Saturday afternoon to investigate... and, arrested Thomas Maher.  Maher was arrested... without incident... on one count of second-degree harassment.  He was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.

South Carolina man dies from injuries suffered when his bike struck parked car in Brocton...
A South Carolina man has died from injuries suffered when his bicycle struck a parked car in the village of Brocton last week.  Sheriff's officers and Brocton fire crews responded to the scene on Harmon Avenue about 3 p.m. Wednesday... and, found that the bike rider -- 64 year-old Michael McKay of Greenville, SC -- had been seriously hurt.  Deputies say McKay was traveling west when he collided with a parked motor vehicle.  McKay later died from his injuries.

DA announces Grand Jury indictment of Jamestown man in stabbing death of north county man...
A Jamestown man has been indicted on a murder charges by the Chautauqua County Grand Jury in the stabbing death of a Forestville man earlier this year.  District Attorney Jason Schmidt says the panel handed down the indictment Monday against 27 year-old Robert Brinkley... who is charged with second-degree murder... first-degree manslaughter... and, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Schmidt says Brinkley committed a "brutal and predatory attack without justification" against 32 year-old Torry Kenny in the area of Lakeview Avenue and Eighth Street on May 3.  The DA adds that Kenny was unarmed and fearing for his life when he was stabbed and collapsed on the street.  Schmidt says Brinkley pled not guilty to the charges.  County Court Judge David Foley set bail at $1-million cash or... $2-million property bond.  If convicted... Schmidt says Brinkley faces a prison sentence of 25 years to life.

Condemned home on Jamestown's northside further damaged by fire Monday night...
Quick work by Jamestown firefighters contained flames to the back side of a condemned home on the city's northside Monday night.  Fire Battalion Chief Dan Balling says crews were called to the scene at 625 Prendergast Ave. just after 7:30 p.m., and, found heavy smoke from the rear of the structure.  Balling says the fire at the back of the home was starting to move up the building and firefighters ran one hand-line to get the flames out.  He says they had the fire under control in about five minutes.  No one was inside the building, and no injuries were reported.  Balling says there was some additional damage done to the house.  Crews were still pouring water on part of the lower back of the building... and, checking for any extension until about mid-evening.  No cause has been determined.

City Council approves two union contracts; Sheldon Eulogizes Dolce...
The Jamestown City Council has approved two more, four-year employee contracts with two of the city's smaller bargaining units.  Lawmakers approved both measures unanimously, 8-0.  The first was a new agreement with the Jamestown City Administrative Association... which represents public works, assessor's office... and, comptroller's office employees.  The other was for the Jamestown Urban Renewal Agency... which includes employees of the Department of Development.  Both contracts are retroactive to this past Jan.1... and, run through the end of 2029.  The mayor's office says there is still one employee contract being ironed out... and, that's with AFSCME workers from the DPW and the Parks Department.

Monday night's meeting was also the first gathering of the panel since the passing of the longest serving member of the panel... Tony Dolce.  Dolce passed away suddenly -- at home -- the morning of July 18th in his sleep.  Long-time friend and fellow Councilman Brent Sheldon delivered a brief, but emotionsal eulogy of Dolce who he says his contributions were many between being on council, to teaching at JHS, and, coaching among others.  Dolce was first elected to the City Council in November of 1993... and, served from January of 1994 until the day of his passing.  He was also a 35-year government studies and history teacher at Jamestown High School.

Man from Ashville arrested for BWI after watercraft mishap on Chautauqua Lake...         
An Ashville man has been arrested for boating while intoxicated after falling off his personal water craft last Saturday night in Chautauqua Lake.  Sheriff's officers say their Navigation Division was called to a man in distress in the water near the town of North Harmony about 6:30 p.m.  Deputies say they found and brought 62 year-old Edward Wojcik on board safely... and, later found that he was intoxicated at the time of the mishap.  Officers tookd Wojcik to their Ashville Substation... where he consented to a breath test... and, they found his blood alcohol content was .20.  He was charged with BWI... BWI with a BAC of .20 or greater... and having no signal device on his watercraft.  Wojcik was released with appearance tickets for North Harmony Town Court at a later date.

Final preparations underway for 81st annual Gerry Rodeo...
The finishing touches are being put on the grounds of the Gerry Rodeo in preparation for the 81st annual event Aug. 5 - 8.  The rodeo is hosted each year by the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department... and, there will be one show, each night.  Rodeo Chairman Tom Atwell says the grounds are shaping up nicely... with making repairs, and painting.  Atwell says they've also changed out 70 bleacher boards... which is the most they've replaced in many years.  He says there are a total of eight catagories that'll be featured during the week... including bareback riding, barrel racing, and bull riding.  Each night's performance in the Rodeo arena will begin at 8 p.m., and, will be preceeded by the rodeo's beef barbecue dinners... which are served beginning at 5 p.m. in the dining hall. 

City man arrested on domestic violence, and related charges...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman with a screwdriver and attacking her -- in front of a child -- for several hours.  City police were called to a westside residence shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday for a physical domestic incident in-progress.  Officers say they could hear yelling coming from the upstairs area... and, that a side window had been smashed out.  Inside... they made contact with the people involved... and, arrested 19 year-old Kahmara Holloman without incident.  Holloman is charged with second-degree unlawful imprisonment... third-degree assault... endangering the welfare of a child... and, fourth-degree grand larceny.  He was held pending arraignment.

Man from Jamestown arrested for allegedly assaulting worker at UPMC Chautauqua and causing thousands of dollars in damage to equipment there...
A city man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting one person and causing thousands of dollars in damage to equipment at UPMC Chautauqua Hospital.  City police were called to the 207 Foote Ave. location shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday for a disorderly person.  Officers investigated... and, found that 34 year-old Tony Mosley had assaulted a staff person... and, then damaged the equipment.  Police took Mosley into custody without incident and he was taken to the city jail on charges of second-degree assault... and, second-degree criminal mischief.  He was held pending arraignment.

Man and woman arrested in Jamestown for trespassing inside condemned building...
A man and woman have been arrested for allegedly trespassing inside a condemned building on Jamestown's southside.  City police say they were called to the location shortly after 8 p.m. last Friday... and, on arrival... found 44 year-old Teri Galati... and, 64 year-old Leonard Wilson trespassing inside.  Both were taken into custody without incident.  Officers also found that Galati was in violation of an order of protection.  Galati and Wilson were both taken to the city jail pending arraignment on one count each of third-degree criminal trespass... and, Galati was also charged with first-degree criminal contempt.

City, state officials to hold first Plan. Committee meeting on Jamestown's DRI proposal...
The first meeting of the Local Planning Committee for Jamestown's Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant will be held this Wednesday morning.  Mayor Kim Ecklund's Office says the meeting will take place at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts Media Arts Studio from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  City leaders say this first meeting will include an overview of the DRI program, a review and discussion of the City’s DRI application, and a summary of the eight-month planning process culminating in a Strategic Investment Plan that will guide revitalization efforts... including the award of nearly $10-million by New York State to community and
economic development projects.  It will also include an overview of the Open Call for Projects that will be used to solicit potential projects for funding consideration, project eligibility and funding criteria.  The meeting will be co-chaired by Mayor Ecklund... and, a representative from the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council.  The committee will continue to meet regularly until the plan is completed in early 2027.

Wendel details process that led to decision to relocate most South County Offices to the Lynn Building...
The decision by the Chautauqua County Legislature to move most of the South County facilities to the Lynn Building ends a four-year search for a new location.  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel after lawmakers voted 12-5 to enter into a lease agreement... starting next year... with East Third Ventures... which is purchasing the building.  Wendel says the price for the building has come down significantly from the original price of $3.1-million.  East Third, he says, has an option to buy the building.  He says they also toured the Furniture Mart building three times, but in the end felt it wasn't the right place.  Other factors... he says... included keeping the south county offices in the city of Jamestown after looking into leasing space at the Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood.  As for keeping Infinity and Chautauqua Striders at the Lynn Building... Wendel says they were willing to help them relocate -- if they wanted to.  However... he says they will locate probation elsewhere to allay safety concerns over people on probation being near young children.  Wendel says... with the way leases are set up with properties they lease in the city... the Jamestown Department of Motor Vehicles will likely be the first to move into the new location.  The DMV's current location lacks off-street parking.

Corry, Pa. man arrested as fugitive from justice in town of Harmony...
A suspicious situation on Button Valley Road in the town of Harmony has led to the capture of a fugitive from justice in Pennsylvania.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene about 1:30 p.m. last Saturday... and, investigated the matter.  Deputies then arrested 30 year-old Stephen Foster of Corry, Pa. on warrants issued in Pennsylvania.  Foster was taken to the county jail... and charged as a fugitive from justice.  He was held pending extradiction.

Woman arrested in Sherman for harassment...
A woman from Sherman has been arrested for allegedly harassing another person in the town of Sherman early last week.  Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday, July 20.  Officers say they found that 45 year-old Heather Ramsey had made unwanted physical contact with another person the previous day.  She was arrested for second-degree harassment... and, was arraigned.  Ramsey was issued appearance tickets for Sherman Town Court.

Investigation closed on double-suicide in parking lot at UPMC Chautauqua...
The two people found dead inside a parked car on the campus of UPMC Chautauqua Hospital in Jamestown died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.  City police say they were called to the 207 Foote Ave. address just after 2 p.m. Wednesday on a report of two unresponsive people inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the emergency department.  Bystanders say on social media they were in the area when the incident occured said they heard gun shots around that time.  Officers say there was no threat to the public... and, the names of the victims will not be released at this time.  Jamestown police say the investigation has now been closed.

County Legislature approves amended, job creation priority resolution...
The Chautauqua County Legislature has approved an amended resolution making job growth the county's top economic development priority.  The measure... offered by the Republican Majority... replaced the previous resolution offered by Jamestown Democrat Fred Larson earlier this Summer.  After changes he proposed were shot-down by the majority... Larson blamed partisan politics because lawmakers were about to vote on a measure they has just rejected.  The amended measure declared "Sustainable Disposable Income Growth" as the top priority.  Fredonia Republican Bob Scudder called it a "glorified motion..." but, said he supports it because it's time to "move on from this topic."  Larson said while investment is important in economic development... it doesn't necessarily create more jobs.  He cited a presentation he attended in 2024 about a $10-million dollar solar farm project that was projected to create "half of a new job."  The final resolution was approved unanimously... and, adds that the county's Industrial Development Agency has supported projects the past five years that have created 4,000 permanent and temporary -- or construction jobs... and, retained 5,800.

Whitaker lauds Dolce for his more than 30 years working in JPS District...
Many in the public know of the late Tony Dolce's as a more-than 30 year member of the Jamestown City Council.  However... there was also Tony Dolce the teacher and student mentor at Jamestown High School.  That from School Superintendent Kevin Whitaker... who called Dolce an "absolute fixture" and "pillar of the district."  Whitaker says he knew about Dolce while he was still at the Geneva district before coming to Jamestown.  He says the superintendent there worked with Dolce as a teacher in Jamestown many years back, and recalled him as a special person and teacher.  While he was known as a government studies and history teacher... Dr. Whitaker says Dolce was also very involved in other aspects of school life -- including being a Class Advisor and working graduation.  In fact... Whitaker says he was pleasantly surprised to see Dolce return to help with this year's commencement in late June at Chautauqua Institution.  He says Dolce had been working with teacher Chris Maggio to take over some of the graduation duties as he retired.

County Legislature offers tribute, moment of silence, for Tony Dolce...
More tributes being given out for late Jamestown City Councilman Tony Dolce.  The Chautauqua County Legislature took a few moments at the beginning of it's voting session in Jamestown to remember Dolce.  Lakewood's Jamie Gustafson read a memorial to Dolce... calling him a "devoted public servant... educator... mentor and life-long resident."  She says he was known for his integrity, thoughtful leadership, and unwavering commitment to doing what was best for the community."  Gustafson also noted Dolce's 35 years with the Jamestown Public Schools -- mostly at the high school... where he taught government studies and history.  She says generations of students benefitted from his guidance... encouragement and passion for education. Gustafson says Dolce was often referred to as "Mr. Jamestown" for his "vast knowledge... kindness... humility... and genuine care for others."  The legislature also observed a moment of silence for Dolce following the tribute.  He passed away -- in his sleep -- last Saturday morning at the age of 64.

Langworthy touts approval of "Stop Insider Trading Act..."
Congress has narrowly approved new restrictions on lawmakers being able to trade stocks... but, falls short of being a total ban.  The House of Rpresentatives Wednesday approved the "Stop Insider Trading Act" that was co-sponsored by local Congressman Nick Langworthy, 232-198.  In a press release overnight... Langworthy said "from the day I came to Congress, I've consistently championed legislation to ban Members and their spouses from trading individual stocks because we are here to serve the people we represent, not cash in on information that isn’t available to the public."  The Buffalo-area Republican called the approval "an important step toward stopping this insidious practice... I’m not a millionaire, and I don’t trade stocks.  I came to Congress to fight for our communities who, for too long, have been forgotten by those in power."  He also urged the Senate to approve the bill. 

World Series of Wheels to be held Saturday at Bergman Park... One of the major fund-raisers for the Babe Ruth World Series held in Jamestown will be taking place tomorrow at Bergman Park.  The World Series Committee says the 43rd annual World Series of Wheels will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a rain date of the following day -- Sunday the 26th.  Event Co-Chairman Keith Ecklund has also announced a new major sponsor this year.  Excalibur Motor Sports has been a sponsor the past few years... and, has elevated to a major sponsor this year.  In addition... the committee says they're excited to announce they will have members of the local emergency services on hand to discuss their operations as well as displaying equipment and vehicles.  Proceeds will help support the upcoming, 13-year-old World Series at Diethrick Park from Aug. 15-22.

Inmate at Collins Correctional Facility died from injuries suffered in attack by another inmate...
The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is looking into the death of a Collins Correctional Facility inmate.  State Police say their Bureau of Criminal Investigation was notified Tuesday night of an altercation at Collins that resulted in the death of 34 year-old Jose Aponte who was serving a sentence for a burglary-related conviction in the Bronx.  State Police say the preliminary investigation revealed that Aponte was attacked by another inmate in a Residential Rehabilitation Unit... resulting in serious injuries.  They add that Aponte was taken to Bertrand-Chaffee Hospital in Springville where he later died. 

County Legislature approves new So. County Office lease with developer -- East Third Ventures -- which is purchasing the Lynn Building in Jamestown...
After much discussion and debate... the Chautauqua County Legislature last night approved a new lease agreement to move most of it's South County Offices to the Lynn Building.  The building is being purchased by East Third Ventures... headed up by Jamestown native Joe Russah.  Prior to the 12-5 vote... Russah told lawmakers that he and his partner are committed to Jamestown and making this work... and, they're looking at buying and refurbishing other properties.  Many of the concerns expressed during the meeting at the Robert H. Jackson Center were over the fate of the Infinity Visual and Performing Arts, and Chautauqua Striders programs.  To that end... Republican Majority Leader Jamie Gustafson introduced two amendments... one to keep county probation from being housed at the new location... and, supporting keeping Infinity and Striders at that location.  That was approved as well.  Minority Democrats complained that the proposal to lease space from East Third Ventures was first made public just nine days prior.  Jamestown Democrat Bob Whitney was concerned over parking... and, wanted the measure tabled for a month.  However... Ellicott Republican Lisa Vanstrom noted that four Democrats voted for the new lease in committee.  Once the final vote was taken... two Democrats joined with Republicans to vote for the proposal.

County lawmakers say they're already familiar with East Third Ventures because the county leases space from the developer for DMV in Dunkirk...
County leaders are familiar with the men heading up the East Third Ventures group because they lease out space from them for the Department of Motor Vehicles Office in Dunkirk.  Public Facilities Committee Chairman Dalton Anthony says he's impressed by what Joseph Russah and his team have done there... and, that's why they haven't heard much about them regarding the north county facilities.  Earlier concerns were voiced by Infinity Visual and Performing Arts Director Shane Hawkins... who said having probation and mental health in that building with hundreds of children during the week would be a mistake.  The run-down conditions at the current South County Office building were also brought up.  Cory Matson has worked with Child Protective Services for 19 years... and, says the building has been neglected by the landlord.  Others have also complained that the South County Office building at Fourth and Pine Streets is difficult to navigate.  

Gillibrand celebrating Senate approval of Older American's Act reauthorization bill...
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is celebrating unanimous approval in the Senate of her bipartisan, Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act.  The New York Democrat is also urging the House of Representatives to do likewise.  During a virtual press conference Wednesday morning... Gillibrand said the legislation renews funding for the many essential services provided by the OAA... including meals, help with house cleaning, and support for caregivers.  Gillibrand is calling on the House to pass the measure before the August break.  She says the most recent OAA expired in late 2024... and, so far the impacts have been minimal.  However... she says it needs to be re-authorized.

Danielson Tool Company.  City officials and members of the Historic Marker Committee were on hand for the event at the location of what later became the Proto Tool Company at  583 Allen St.  City Historian Mike Rohlin noted that J.P. Danielson actually got started with Cresent Tool before going out on his own after he and Carl Peterson went their separate ways.  Historic Marker Committee member Art Osterdahl's father worked at Proto Tool from the mid-1950s to the 1960s.  He says the committee obtained a photo of the former factory... and, were able to get the marker set up near where the front door of the plant ws located.  Proto Tool purchased the company in 1947.

Stabbing in Jamestown lands victim in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries...
An argument over a cellphone allegedly led to a stabbing on the city's northside about mid-afternoon Tuesday in Jamestown.  City police were called to the scene about 2:30 p.m., and, quickly located the suspect -- identified as 19 year-old Evein Fuller.  Officers took Fuller into custody without incident on one count of Felony second-degree assault.  He was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.  The unidentified victim was taken to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. 

Hamburg man arrested for alleged animal cruelty in the town of Hanover...
A man from the Buffalo-area has now been charged in connection with an animal cruelty case involving two neglected dogs in the town of Hanover.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to a report involving two abandoned dogs inside an Old Hanover Road home back on July 4.  Their investigation determined that 32 year-old Robert Lyman of Hamburg had not provided food, water, or working utilities to the residence where the dogs were kept.  A warrant was issued for Lyman charging him with violations of the Agriculture and Markets Law for overdriving, torturing and injuring animals... and, failure to provide proper sustenance and Agriculture and Markets Law for the abandonment of animals.  He was later found and arrested by Erie County Sheriff's Officers... and, taken to the Chautauqua County Jail pending centralized arraignment.

The 143rd Chautauqua County Fair opens to inclement weather, no cannon shot...
The 2026 Chautauqua County Fair is now open for business... though rain and windy conditions late Tuesday morning put a damper on the opening ceremony.  The Civil War-era cannon could not be fired.  However... the weather did not keep several local dignitaries away from the opening in Dunkirk.  Among them was County Executive P.J. Wendel, who says the fair is a great way to showcase the county.  Wendel is urging everyone to spend sometime there, because Chautauqua County is one of a dwindling number of counties that still have a fair.  State Assemblyman Andrew Molitor says the fair is important because it supports the county's current and future farmers who are part of the 4-H program that raises cows, horses sheep and others.  Following the opening ceremony, several of the dignitaries took a tour of one of the Chautauqua County 4-H animal barns.  The fair continues through Sunday, July 26.

Funeral Arrangements announced for long-time City Councilman Tony Dolce...
Funeral arrangments have now been made for long-time Jamestown City Councilman Anthony "Tony" Dolce... who passed away in his sleep last Saturday morning.  Dolce was born on New Year's Eve of 1961.  He was 64... and, was a 1979 graduate of Jamestown High School.  He later received bachelor's and master's degrees from the SUNY College at Fredonia... and taught government studies and history at JHS for 35 years before his retirement.  He was also Class Advisor five times.  The family will receive friends this Friday at the Lind Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.  Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  You may leave words of condolence at lindfuneralhome.com.

Molitor formally announces run for re-election to State Assembly...
Assemblyman Andrew Molitor says he's "very proud and humbled" to represent the people of New York's 150th Assembly District... and, he wants to continue doing that for another two years.  The incumbent Republican from Westfield, who was first elected, in 2024, is running for a second term in Albany.  Molitor, a former assistant district attorney, says he loves advocating for local residents, especially those who are in law enforcement.  He says the state is "not done tampering" with its criminal justice system.  Without going into specifics... he says some of those changes would be "dangerous."  Molitor also touted his ability to help prevent "bad legislation" from becoming state law. He adds that work also need to be done in other areas, such as the state's energy policy where natural gas can be used as a bridge fuel to the future, and would benefit the Southern Tier.  Molitor is being challenged in November by Fredonia Democrat Tom Carle.

Federal trial for Matar to begin with jury selection today; opening statements tomorrow...
Jury selection for the federal trial of the New Jersey man convicted in county court of attacking and trying to kill famed author Salman Rushdie at Chautauqua Institution begins today.  Spokeswoman Barbara Burns with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Buffalo says 27 year-old Hadi Matar's trial is slated to being on Wednesday... and, the trial is expected to last about a week.  Matar was found guilty in county court of attempted murder for rushing the stage at the Chautauqua Amphitheater in August of 2022... and, stabbing Rushdie several times.  Matar was finally subdued... but, Rushdie was critically injured... and, lost an eye in the attack.  He was sentenced to up to 25 years in jail on the conviction.... but, faces up to life if convicted in the federal trial.  He is expected to be represented by County Public Defender Ned Barone... who represented Matar during his state trial.

City man arrested for drug and weapons possession following raid and pursuit last week...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested on drug and weapons possession charges following a raid on a westside home late last week.  City police say JPD narcotics detectives... and those with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office... executed a search warrant at 63 W. 14th St. in the city about 2 p.m. last Thursday.  Just prior to the raid... the target of the investigation, 24 year-old Dasai Bradberry, was seen leaving the residence in a vehicle.  A JPD patrol was able to do a traffic stop on North Main Street... where Bradberry ran off on foot.  He jumped a fence into Lakeview Cemetery... and, discarded a large quantity of methampehtamine and fentanyl before being caught.  Bradberry was arrested and officers found the drugs... which included just over 104-grams of meth, and nearly 11-grams of fentanyl.  Police secured the West 14th Street residence... and there found two 9-mm "ghost guns..." digital scales, packaging materials, cutting agents and a quantity of cash.  Bradberry is charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... three counts of second-degree criminally using drug paraphenallia... second-degree obstruction... resisting arrest... and, tampering with physical evidence.  Bradberry was also wanted on a federal warrant for weapons and narcotics trafficking... and, is now being held in the County Jail.

Man from Mayville arrested in Jamestown for speeding, DWI following police pursuit...
A Mayville man has been arrested for allegedly speeding... and, fleeing a police officer... on a motorcycle early Sunday afternoon.  City police say a patrol on the southside spotted the two-wheeler traveling at more than 25 mph 30 mph speed limit shortly before 2 p.m.  They tried to stop the motorcycle... but, the operator, later identified as 48 year-old Gregg Morrison, refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed.  After the brief pursuit... Morrison pulled into the driveway of a residence, concealed the motorcycle inside the garage to evade officers.  However... he was found at the home... and, arrested without further incident.  Police also found that Morrison was riding the motorcycle with a revoked license... and, that the bike had switched license plates.  He also failed field sobriety tests... showing that he was intoxicated.  Morrison faces charges including:  third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle... first-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation... DWI with two previous convictions... and reckless driving.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

Sunday morning crash on the State Thruway kills one, injures another...
A fatal crash on the State Thruway north of the Chautauqua County line led to the highway's eastbound lanes being closed for several hours Sunday.  State Police Troop T says the accident occured just after 4:30 a.m. in the town of Evans and involved a car and a tractor trailer.  Troopers say the driver of the car... 33 year-old Andre Akin of Buffalo... was in the passing lane when the vehicle drifted into the driving lane and collided with the tractor-trailer.  Police say both vehicles went onto the south shoulder of the road and struck the guide rail.  Akin was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the tractor-trailer... an Illinois man... was taken to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment of minor injuries.  An accident reconstruction team was brought in to investigate.  No charges have been filed.

Long-time City Councilman Tony Dolce passes away suddenly in his sleep last weekend...
The city of Jamestown is mourning the loss of a long-time City Council member and former Council President... and, JHS Teacher.  Anthony "Tony" Dolce passed away in his sleep early last Saturday morning.  Mayor Kim Ecklund released a printed statement late Saturday... announcing that it was an -- "incredibly difficult day for the city of Jamestown."  In the statement... Ecklund said Dolce was -- "a dedicated public servant, respected leader, and someone who devoted more than three decades of his life to the community he loved."  Ecklund informed council members of Dolce's passing Saturday morning.  Dolce was also heavily involved in the push to save Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church after it was to close by the Buffalo Catholic Diocese... and, he was a constant presence in recent years at Diethrick Park after his son, Christian, was named general manager of the Jamestown Tarp Skunks... and, was a steady presence on the City Council since being first elected in 1993.  Dolce was a lifelong resident of Jamestown, graduating from Jamestown High School and also teaching there for over 35 years as a government and economics teacher.  He was a 1979 graduated of JHS.  He is survived by his wife, Anne, and grown children Amelia and Christian.  Funeral arrangments will be announced.

Dolce chaired his last Public Safety Committee meeting just days before his passing...
Just days before his passing... Tony Dolce was on hand to chair the City Council's Public Safety Committee.  Dolce was named to head that panel... even though Democrats hold a 5-4 majority on council.  He reported on a handful of resolutions... and, other actions... including planning for an Aug. 4 gathering of Neighborhood Watch Groups for National Night Out at Bergman Park.  In the past -- he said -- city police and councilmembers would gather at different locations when there were several watch groups and parties.  However... with some new and reconstituted groups... Dolce said they were going to hold one gathering at Bergman Park.  Coincidently... the Public Safety Committee had a number of current... and, other events to vote on through the end of this year.  Dolce said one of those was the Jamestown Christmas Parade and Holiday Celebration... on Saturday, Dec. 5.  In her statement... Mayor Ecklund noted that she had the privilege of serving alongside Dolce on city council for more than 20 years before being elected as Mayor.  During that time... she noted that they had a working relationship that grew into a "lasting friendship."

Orchard Park man arrested in town of Chautauqua following alleged DWI crash...
A one-car crash in the town of Chautauqua last weekend has led to the arrest of a Buffalo-area man for drunk driving.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to a reported accident on the Chautauqua-Stedman Road shortly after 11 p.m. last Saturday night.  Their investigation found that 27-year-old David Kilian of Orchard Park was operating the vehicle while intoxicated.  Kilian was arrested for DWI... and, later released with an appearance ticket for Chautauqua Town Court at a later date.

Laurel Run's annual "Flag Relay" held despite poor air quality from wildfires...
The 30th annual Laurel Memorial Run and Walk flag relay went on as scheduled last Friday despite the poor air quality in the area.  It began with a ceremony at the Resource Center's Jamestown location and ended at about midday with a victory celebration at its Dunkirk site.  TRC's Steve Waterson says representatives from area high schools did not participate because of the smoky air, but there were still a handful of people who walked or rode during the 31-mile trek... including Ray Graff of Silver Creek -- who rode his bicycle most of the way.  Others did the Laurel-thon from Jamestown to Dunkirk.  One of the three runners who ran the entire 31-mile "Laurel-thon" was Joel Newburg... who says it got a little "hazy" in spots... but, overall conditions were "very nice."  Mike Pietrkiewicz, a marathon runner, said it's the first time he has gone more than 26 miles.  Newburg and Pietrkiewicz were joined by Keith Mackowiak, who says the three helped raise over $8,000 for this year's event.  Proceeds from the event benefit people with developmental disabilities in Chautauqua County.

Woman arrested in city for allegedly damaging a business in mid-June...
A woman from Jamestown now faces charges after allegedly damaging property at a downtown business last month.  City police say they were first called to the scene about 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17.  Officers say they received a "panic alarm" from the business... and, found 22 year-old Athena Partyka inside displaying erratic behavior.  Their investigation determined that Partyka had caused about one-thousand dollars in damages to the property.  When told she was under arrest... she briefly resisted before being taken into custody.  She was charged with third-degree criminal mischief... third-degree criminal tampering... and, resisting arrest.

Jamestown man accused of stealing wiring from building in Kiantone...         
A city man is accused of breaking into a building in the town of Kiantone last month and stealing wiring.  Sheriff's deputies say they arrested 44 year-old Brandon Knisley of Jamestown last Saturday on arrest warrants for allegedly entering the building on Martin Road back on June 28.  Officers say he then cut and stole the wiring.  Deputies investigated... and, Knisley was charged with third-degree burglary... fourth-degree criminal mischief... and, petty larceny.  He was taken to the county jail pending arraignment.

Fluvanna firefighters make quick work of small fire at Bob Evans restaurant on Route 60... 
Fluvanna firefighters made quick work of a small fire at the Bob Evans Restaurant on Route 60 -- just north of Jamestown -- late Thursday afternoon.  Chautauqua County fire dispatchers say crews were called to the scene for a mulch fire that had begun spreading to the building about 4 p.m.  Firefighters were able to get the flames out quickly... and, cleared smoke from an area near the bathrooms.  The building did not need to be evacuated.  No one was hurt.  Crews were at the scene about an hour.  The cause was not released.

AQI Advisory remains in effect through Friday night...
All of Western New York... including all of Chautauqua County... remain under an Air Quality Health Advisory due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.  The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation... and, State Department of Health... is continuing the advisory for "fine particulate matter."  Forecaster Dan Kelly with the National Weather Service in Buffalo says the smoke was especially visable during the day Thursday... and, was still visable in many places today.  Kelly says breathing in the smoke can be a problem for the very young and very old... especially those with lung and breathing issues.  Air Quality Health Advisories are issued when DEC meteorologists predict levels of pollution... either ozone or fine particulate matter... are expected to exceed an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 100. 

In wake of Thursday night address... Sen. Gillibrand says Trump needs to get over 2020 loss... 
President Donald Trump used a primetime address Thursday to question the legitimacy of U.S. elections and push for more restrictive voting laws.  The Republican president president revisited debunked theories about his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden, despite ongoing voter concerns about other pressing issues.  Trump claimed election interference but provided no evidence of manipulated votes.  U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says Trump needs to "get over" 2020 because Americans are more worried about "paying their bills."  Gillibrand says he's also trying to "lay the groundwork" to undermine this November's elections.  Some networks choose not to air the address live.  Gillibrand says... instead of relitigating the 2020 election... there are bigger concerns to be focused on such as the cost of food, and health care.  

"Cents for St. Susan’s" Campaign raises record $42,000 +....
The annual "Cents for St. Susan's" campaign to raise money to support the Jamestown-area's largest soup kitchen has set a new record for the amount raised.  The Board of Public Utilities and the St. Susan's Center has announced the fund-raiser brought in more than $40,000 for the first time.  Center Executive Director Cheri Rowland was "totally amazed" by the final total of $42,386.  Rowland says they're "blessed to have a community as that of Jamestown for supporting St. Susan's."  She notes the sponsors who take part are a big part fo their success.  A total of 14 sponsors contributed $500 -- or more -- each.  Money was also raised through the BPU's annual hot dog sale... which brought in more than $1,700.  More than 50 canisters were placed around the area to support the effort as well.  With increasing food costs... and, for day-to-day operations... Rowland says the financial boost is welcomed.  The "Cents for St. Susan's" campaign brought in more than $6,000 more this year than last year's record of $36,330.  The Glenora Radio Network was a media sponsor of this year's effort.

Jamestown man arrested for swinging baseball bat at people during Wednesday afternoon fight...
A city man has been arrested for allegedly swinging a baseball bat at two people -- one a child -- during a fight Wednesday afternoon on Jamestown's southside.  City police say they were called to the location about 5 p.m. on a report of a fight with weapons involved.  A JPD STRIVE Detail responded... and, found the suspect... 38 year-old Joshua Becker... a short distance away.  Becker was arrested for third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, second-degree menacing... and, held pending arraignment.

The 30th annual Laurel Run underway...
The two-day event celebrating the achievements of Chautauqua County residents with developmental disabilities is officially underway for the 30th year.  The Laurel Memorial Run and Walk began this morning with a flag relay run from Jamestown to Dunkirk and continues Saturday morning with activities in Silver Creek.  Steve Waterson of the Resource Center credits the longevity of this event to Wayne and Elaine Hotelling... and the advocacy for their late daughter, Laurel, who lived with Down syndrome.  Waterson says it was originally a "one-and-done" event... but, it caught on so much they kept it going.  Wayne Hotelling says the event would not be possible without the backing of the local community, as well as support from outside the area.  Proceeds from Laurel Run are used to provide employment and work training opportunities for adults with disabilities.  They also support the Dr. John Vona "Smile" Fund to provide dental services for people with disabilities.
 

Multiple youths, and adults, arrested following curfew violations early Wednesday morning in Jamestown...
Three people have been arrested in Jamestown for allegedly allowing five minors they were supposed to be supervising be outside after curfew and attacking people and smashing out windows.  City police say they were called to an eastside address shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday.  But.. prior to arrival, officers say the juveniles had run off.  Based on the descriptions, numerous complaints and previous dealings with the youths... officers quickly responded to the juvenile's home and made contact.  When they arrived... three more juveniles were out in the city street after curfew and refused to comply with numerous warnings to leave the area and return home.  Officers placed the two juveniles into custody from the previous incident when other group of youths began approaching the patrol vehicles and were attempting to open the patrol car doors.  After ignoring the officers warnings... police began taking the juveniles into custody.  One tried to flee and then attempted to hit an officer before being arrested.  The investigation led to the arrests of three people.  They included: 44 year-old William... and, 38-year-old Katherine Morse... who allegedly failed to exercise control of their child who continuously is located committing crimes both before... and after curfew hours.  The Morse's were both charged with a curfew violation and endangering the welfare of a child.  Police also found that 35 year-old Mercedes Baca was in charge of four juveniles who were unsupervised... and, she was arrested on four counts of curfew violation... and, four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.  Police say those children were accused of committing crimes both before and after curfew hours.  The Morses and, Baca were all held pending arraignment... and, the juveniles were all released and charges are pending.

JPD warns arrests were coming due to persistent curfew violations, and other crimes...
Jamestown police say they have seen a "heavy increase" in the number of juveniles under the age of 16 during the overnight hours.  Officials are now warning that "these juveniles have frequent contacts with JPD and are committing criminal acts... that include criminal mischief, assaults, stealing, and riding motorized bikes on the streets along with other crimes."  JPD officials add they are committed to enforcing the Jamestown City Code along with state Penal Law regarding Endangering the Welfare of a Child if applicable.  Juveniles up to age 16 should be off the streets between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.  Parents, guardians and those who have custody and control of such minors will be held accountable for juvenile actions... and, juveniles will be petitioned to the appropriate Court.

All of Western New York... including all of Chautauqua County... remain under an Air Quality Health Advisory due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.  The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation... and, State Department of Health... is continuing the advisory for "fine particulate matter."  Forecaster Dan Kelly with the National Weather Service in Buffalo says the smoke was especially visable late this morning... and, will remain so through the day today... and into the early overnight.  Kelly says it'll return Friday morning, and be around through Friday afternoon.  Both state environmental and health agencies say the visable smoke and hazy skies will also bring smoke-related pollution... and, the very young and old should be protected, and stay inside as much as possible.  The sky and clouds in the immediate Jamestown-area showed a slight orange tint at times by mid-afternoon yesterday.  Air Quality Health Advisories are issued when DEC meteorologists predict levels of pollution... either ozone or fine particulate matter... are expected to exceed an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 100.

A man from Jamestown has been arrested for allegedly swinging a baseball bat at two people -- one a child -- during a fight Wednesday afternoon.  city police say they were called to a southside address about 5 p.m. on a report of a fight with weapons involved.  A JPD STRIVE Detail responded... and, investigated.  They found the suspect... 38 year-old Joshua Becker... a short distance away and he ws arrested for third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, second-degree menacing.  Becker was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.

Two children found in living in deplorable conditions in Jamestown, two adults arrested...
Two people from Jamestown have been arrested for allegedly allowing two children to live in deplorable conditions.  City police say they were called to a northside address about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to check on the well-being of multiple children.  After investigating... officers arrested both 38 year-old Mariangel Velazquez-Rosario, and 26 year-old Fernando Mojica-Reyes on two counts each of endangering the welfare of a child.  Both were held pending arraignment.

City woman arrested on drug charges during probation check...
A woman from Jamestown has been arrested for being found in possession of drugs during a probation check last Thursday afternoon.  City police say they were called to an eastside address shortly before 4 p.m. for a narcotics investigation.  Officers say they found that 44 year-old Lisa George was in possession of a quantity of methamphetamine... digital scales... and, other paraphernalia.  Police arrested George for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and two counts of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  She was held pending arraignment.
 

Four arrested after four children found living in deplorable conditions on Jamestown's eastside...
Four adults have been arrested for allegedly allowing four children to live in deplorable and unsanitary conditions on Jamestown's eastside.  City police were called to make a domestic "well-being" check at the unidentified address about 10 a.m. Tuesday... and, investigated.  Officers arrested 21 year-old Natalie Frost... 22 year-old Sincere Fisher... 23 year-old Justin Heiser and 26 year-old Brianna Heiser.  Police charged Frost with three counts of second-degree criminal contempt... and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child... Fisher is charged with second-degree criminal contempt... and, four counts of child endangerment.  Officers charged both Brianna and Justin Heiser with four counts each of endangering the welfare of a child.  All four were taken to the city jail pending arraignment.

Hochul signs order placing moratorium on data centers; Borrello questions it in light of approved legislation... 
Governor Kathy Hochul has signed an executive order putting a one-year moratorium on permits for new hyperscale data centers in New York state.  However... it has raised the eyebrows of a local state lawmaker.  Senator George Borrello says that's because the moratorium was done by executive order instead of signing the Responsible Data Center Development Act... which the state legislature approved earlier this year.  Borrello says "the devil is in the details..." in particular the need for a "coherant energy policy" to power the "technology of the future."  The Sunset Bay Republican adds that enacting the moratorium by executive order gives Hochul political flexibility, saying that the data center legislation "ties her hands too much."  Borrello says he also believes the issue of data centers has become a political distraction on a number of levels.  He has previously stated his opposition to a statewide moratorium, saying that local governments should have control over whether data centers should be allowed in their communities.

Frewsburg man arrested in Ellicott for blocking driveway of victim of domestic incident...
A Frewsburg man faces several charges following a domestic incident in early July in which he allegedly blocked the victim's driveway with his car.  Ellicott Town Police say they were called to an unidentified town address just after 10 a.m. Thurs., July 2 for a domestic-in-progress.  Officers say 32 year-old Mitchell Costanzo had driven to the person's home, and blocked the driveway in a way the victim couldn't get away.  Police say Costanzo then allegedly got into a physical altercation with the victim, and damaged property belonging to that person.  Officers also found he was allegedly drunk at the time... and, that he was driving with a revoked license.  He's charged with second-degree harassment and second-degree unlawful imprisonment... fourth-degree criminal mischief... DWI... DWI with a blood alcohol content of point-08 or more... third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation... and, driving on a sidewalk.  Costanzo was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment and issued traffic tickets.  He's to appear in Ellicott Town Court at a later date.

Two Hamburg residents arrested in connection with robberies at two Dunkirk businesses...
Two people from Hamburg have been arraigned on charges in connection with a pair of June robberies at separate businesses in the city of Dunkirk.   Dunkirk police say 32-year-old Robert Lyman was located and taken into custody by the Buffalo Police Department last Saturday.  He was arraigned on charges of third-degree robbery and third-degree attempted robbery for his alleged role in the incidents at the Family Dollar on East 4th Street and Crosby's on Central Avenue on June 16.  Lyman was then turned over to Hamburg Town Police to face charges in an alleged robbery in that town.

Meanwhile, Dunkirk Police say they interviewed a woman who ws in the area of the Crosby's robbery.  Officers say 31-year-old Mikayla Miller gave them information that "significantly hindered" their investigation.  As the probe progressed, detectives determined that Miller was an associate of Lyman... and, was aware of what Lyman had allegedly done.  As a result... she was charged with one count of second-degree obstruction... and, issued an appearance ticket for Dunkirk City Court.

UPMC Chautauqua seeking definate increase in need for maternity services with changes to northern Pa. hospitals...
Big changes to hospital maternity wards in northwestern Pennsylvania have resulted in more opportunities for UPMC Chautauqua Hospital.  That's been evident in recent months with the closing of the maternity ward at Warren General Hospital in Warren.  UPMC Chautauqua President Tracy Gates they've been able to take on a significant number -- about 75 of those -- since early 2026.  Gates adds that they are also providing more outpatient follow-up services.  She says UPMC also also made moves to help expectant mothers in Bradford, Pa. with their hospital closing.  She says they've talked with local Congressman Nick Langworthy about cutting some of the "cross-state" obstacles involved... and, Langworthy vowed to help out because some services are not provided in one place or the other.  Earlier this year... Warren General announced it was discontinuing inpatient labor and deliver services due to a severe shortage of OB/GYN physicians in Warren.

Results release of county's STOP-DWI High Visibility Campaign...
Efforts to reduce drunk driving instances in Chautauqua County were working this past July 4 weekend.  The Sheriff's Department reports a total of two DWI Arrests during the period of July 2--5 as part of their "High Visibility Engagement Campaign."  The program is funded through a 2025-26 grant from the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.  In addition to the two DWI arrests... the Sheriff's Office reports one other arrest... 103 vehicle stops... and, 6 vehicles detained for secondary screening. 

U.S. DOT again denies Chautauqua County effort to restore commercial EAS service to Jamestown Airport...
Chautauqua County has again been denied in it's effort to restore Essential Air Service at the county airport near Jamestown.  The U.S. Department of Transportation denied the request in a letter to the county... and, Southern Airways Express -- a copy of which was obtained by Glenora Radio --  which was sent on June 26.  In the proposal... the county and Southern estimated that a Jamestown to Dulles in Washington connection would produce between 6,642 to 9,407 annual outbound and inbound commercial air passengers a year.  However... the DOT said that number would not be enough to sustain the funding the county received in 2016.  The DOT states it did not find the proposal -- "is likely to result" in the 10.6-passengers per day needed to reinstate the service.  They added that there are also regional air hubs... such as Buffalo and Erie, Pa... within a 175 mile radius of Jamestown.  We have a call into County Executive P.J. Wendel for comment but have not heard back yet.

Woman from Chautauqua dies from injuries suffered in Car-Bicycle accident late last Thursday...        
A 78 year-old woman has died from injuries suffered in car-bicycle accident last Thursday in the town of Chautauqua.  Sheriff's deputies say they were called to the scene on the Chautauqua-Stedman Road shortly before 1 p.m. for the accident.  Officers say the driver of the car... 19 year-old Levi Graham of Ashville... was southbound when the crash occured.  They say the car struck the bicylist... 78 year-old Mary Hustead.... who was flown from the scene to UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. where she later died.  Graham has been charged with failure to safely pass a bicycle... and, will appear in Chautauqua Town Court at a later date.

City Council to consider request for LWRP funding for Phase 2 of Chadakoin River Basin improvement project...
City lawmakers in Jamestown will consider a resolution later this month allowing the city to apply for grant funding from New York state for more improvements to the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk.  The city's Department of Development is looking to apply for up to 2-million dollars in Environmental Protection funds administered by the state Office of Planning, Development and Community Infrastructure for a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program grant.  Deputy Director of Housing Policy and Development Kasie Foulk says the funding would be for Phase 2 of the Chadakoin River Basin project.  Foulk says the money would be used for the northside of the basin... which would include: signature gardens, tiered terrace seating, as well as improved access, circulation, safety, and placemaking initiatives intended to create a unique destination for residents and visitors to the City. 

SUNY JCC receiving $2.9-million in funding for new Childcare Center at the college...
Work is expected to begin this fall on a new childcare center at SUNY Jamestown Community College's Jamestown Campus.  The college has announced that space in the Katharine Jackson Carnahan Center will be renovated to create a center serving up to 102 children.  Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced that JCC will receive nearly $2.9-million dollars for the project... one of 37 statewide supported by $106-million in awards from the Child Care Capital Construction Funding Program.  The Jamestown Area YMCA will operate the childcare program. 

Jamestown holding it's own financially through first half of 2026...
The city of Jamestown is holding it's own financially through the first-half of 2026...but, not all the information is in yet.  That from City Comptroller Ericka Thomas who recently reported to the City Council that revenues are on track for the first two quarters of the year.  However... she adds they are still waiting for more information in two revenue areas... one being sales tax revenues... the other is revenues from the sale of cannibus products in the city... which have come in higher than expected.  However... Thomas says those numbers may change before the end of the year.  She adds that overall salaries are also on track for the first six-months of 2026.  She adds there are also payments due on three bonds... and, a current Bond Anticipation Note... all totaling nearly $14-million.  Thomas says fuel costs so far this year are about $137,000 over budget so far... but, she says with Summer construction season underway... that will likely go up.

Chautauqua County Fair to get underway a week from today (Tuesday)...
Chautauqua County's annual celebration of farming, food and fun begins just one week from today.  The 143rd edition of the Chautauqua County Fair is on tap July 21-26 at the fairgrounds in Dunkirk.  County Fair Association President Linda Lanphere says the firing of a Civil War-era cannon will serve as the official kickoff of the fair on the 21st.  Lanphere says there were only four such cannons that had survived through the years... but, this is the only one left that's usable.  Amusements of America will provide the midway rides for the third consecutive year. Lanphere says there will be new attractions at this year's fair.  She describes two of them... one is a blacksmith, and there will be a high-wire act near the entrance off Central Avenue.  There will also be daily performances by Unbelievable Comedy Magic, as well as draft horses and goat-milking demonstrations.  Lanphere adds that this edition of the fair aims to be more interactive with fairgoers.  One example of that will be bringing the animal barns out to the midway.  Events on the Grandstand will include two demolition derbies, harness horse racing, bull riding, and, a monster truck show.  For more information... go on-line to chautauquacofair.org.

Town of Chautauqua woman succumbs to injuries in car-bike accident...

10 year-old girl injured after being struck by car on Route 20 Sunday afternoon...
A juvenile bike rider is being treated at a Buffalo-area hospital after being struck by a car in the town of Portland late Sunday.  Sheriff's officers were called to the scene on Route 20 shortly before 5:30 p.m., and, investigated.  First responders also treated the 10 year-old girl at the scene before they were flown to Oishei Children's hospital in Buffalo for non-life threatening injuries.

Jamestown man arrested for brandishing knife during weekend domestic incident...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested for allegedly threatening another person with a knife during a weekend domestic dispute.  Jamestown police were called to a southside address shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday... and, spoke with the victim on arrival.  Officers say their investigation found that 30 year old Andre McQuiggan had brandished a knife at the victim, causing them to fear physical injury during the the incident.  Police took McQuiggan into custody without incident on charges of first-degree menacing... and, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  He was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.

City man arrested for allowing children to ride on ATV without helmets...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested for allegedly allowing his juvenile child ride an All-Terrain Vehicle on a city street without helmets.  Jamestown police say they were called to a southside business just after 7 a.m. last Saturday on a report of two unattended juveniles.  Officers investigated... and, found that both were alone, and had riden the ATV to the store.  They then contacted the father -- 55 year-old Phillip Hinkley --  and, he was arrested without incident on two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.  Hinkley was held pending arraignment... and, the juveniles were turned over to other family members. 

Ecklund submits list of 15 people to state for local planning commission for deciding on final DRI projects...
A list of 15 people from Jamestown has been submitted for being part of the temporary planning group on the city's Downtown Revitalization Initiative.  That list has been submitted to state development officials for consideration to determine which 10 to 12 projects will receive the $10-million DRI award to the city.  That from Mayor Kim Ecklund... who says the Local Planning Commission can have no direct ties to the proposal... including politicians and those whose project is in the DRI.  Ecklund says the city's been kind of playing catch-up on the process because the Western New York award they received was the last one to be announced.  Ecklund praised the city team -- led by Development Director Crystal Surdyk -- met briefly with state officials to get a direct look at the 24 proposed projects.  The city DRI includes several that have a main focus of tying downtown to the Riverfront area.  Ecklund says they hope to have the 15 member planning commission together to meet later this month.  She made her comments for this weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six, Glenora Radio Network stations.

Dunkirk police identify possible homicide suspect...
Dunkirk police have announced they are looking for a Hamburg man who is the suspect in connection with a robbery and attempted robbery at two city businesses last month.  Officers in the north county city say an arrest warrant has been issued for 32-year-old Robert Lyman, who is also facing charges by Hamburg Town Police for a similar incident.  The incidents in the city of Dunkirk took place at Family Dollar on East 4th Street and Crosby's on Central Avenue -- about 20 minutes apart -- during the afternoon of June 16.  Anyone with information regarding Lyman's whereabouts is asked to call Dunkirk Police at 366-2266.

Wdowiasz says Dunkirk city officials have begun the budget process...
The City of Dunkirk has begun the process of creating its budget for next year... and the Mayor wants to complete that process earlier than in years past.  Kate Wdowiasz says she is proposing a calendar that would move the budget deadlines outlined in the City Charter ahead by one month.  Wdowiasz says they've been constantly been critiqued by State Comptroller's Office over its current budget calendar... and, they've been told to start the process sooner.  The City Charter calls for a proposed budget to be presented by Oct. 14, and a final budget to be adopted by Dec. 15.  Wdowiasz says she has asked her finance team to come up with a draft that stays within the state's property tax cap.  She says last year... to fully fund the 2026 budget... they recommended a 6.8% tax increase.  However... the budget for the current year increased taxes by that 2% ceiling.

Cassadaga man arrested in Stockton for harassment...         
A man from Cassadaga has been arrested for allegedly harassing another person in the town of Stockton.  Sheriff's deputies say they were called to an undisclosed address shortly after 7:30 a.m. Thursday... and, their investigation found that 51 year-old Joshua Fowler had threatened the other individual with physical harm -- or death -- and, he was arrested for second-degree aggravate harassment.  Fowler was arraigned and issued an appearance ticket for Stockton Town Court at a later date.

Schmidt confirms identity of dead Dunkirk shooting victim... 
Chautauqua County's top prosecutor has revealed the identity of the person who died in last month's homicide in the city of Dunkirk.  District Attorney Jason Schmidt confirms that the victim of the shooting at 110 South Gazelle St. was 25-year-old Delani Williams.  Williams was pronounced dead at Brooks Memorial Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound the evening of June 11.  No arrests have been made at this time... but, Schmidt says a person of interest has been developed in the case.

JPD seeking information on missing city teen...
Jamestown police are asking for the public's help in locating a missing teenage who is believed to be a runaway.  Officers say 16 year-old Tajiah McBride was reported missing on June 14... and, has been in contact with her family and a JPD Detective.  She is refusing to come home... and, is not believed to be in any danger.  Tajiah is described as a black female, 5'5" inches tall... 180 pounds with black hair.  If you have any information on her whereabouts... call JPD at 716-483-7537.  In addition... police say anyone knowingly harboring a missing juvenile is in violation of state law... and, is punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.

Langworthy announces $300,000 for upgrades to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital's School of Radiology is in draft appropriations bill...
Local Congressman Nick Langworthy says he's been able to secure $300,000 in a draft appropriations bill for UPMC Chautauqua Hospital's School of Radiology.  Langworthy was in Jamestown recently to tour the hospital... including the school itself.  The Buffalo-area Republican says the hospital asked his office for help in getting the money through the Community Projects Funding program... but, it has yet to be acted on by the full House and U.S. Senate.  Specifically... Langworthy says the funding will help to "modernize the radiology training lab and create clear career pathways in healthcare to help alleviate workforce shortages."  He calls it a "win-win" for the hospital and community... and, he was pleased to be able to get the funding "written into the budget."  The appropriations measure has not yet been approved by the House or Senate... but, Langworthy says it's in the "base text of that bill that will receive congressional action soon." 

City Council approves using $560,000 in non-federal money for engineering work on the stormwater channel maintenance project...
The Jamestown City Council has approved the next step in the $5.5-million, Chadakoin River Stormwater Channel Maintenance project.  Lawmakers recently okayed using $560,000 in non-federal, Marchicelli funding for the engineering phase of the project.  The project would involve clearing nine river channels of debris and sediment accumulated the past 50 years or so.  Acting Public Works Director Mark Roetzer says that's now been submitted to New York state..  Roetzer adds they have also put a request for proposals out for the work, and hope to hear back from interested firms in a couple of weeks... and, award a bid by the end of August.  He says the money comes from the Federal Highway Administration... and, is being administered by the state Department of Transportation.  The city is responsible for a 20% match on the total project cost... or about $1.1-million.  City Comptroller Ericka Thomas says what money is needed could be obtained through increased funds... or borrowing.  Thomas says that'll mainly be addressed as the city begins the budget process.  Roetzer says the city is hoping to get a waiver to at least use some of the $1.25-million obtained by Congressman Nick Langworthy for the project to offset the local share.  He says they're also looking at in-kind services as well.

A city man has been arrested for allegedly violating an order of protection after being found -- laying on the sidewalk -- with the woman who has the order against him.  Jamestown police say they were called to a downtown location about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday for a possible trespassing.  However... officers found two people laying on the sidewalk together... and, found that the man was 36-year-old Arthur Hubbard.  Police also found that the woman had the stay-away order against Hubbard... and, he was taken into custody on one count of first-degree criminal contempt.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

City teen arrested for allegedly threatening juvy with a knife...
A 19 year-old from Jamestown has been arrested for allegedly threatening a juvenile with a knife during an incident on the city's eastside.  Jamestown police say they were called to an undisclosed address just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a person with a weapon.  Officers determined that Kyle Pratt had threatened the juvenile with a knife... and located him a short distance away.  Police took Pratt into custody without incident for second-degree menacing... endangering the welfare of a child... and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  He was held pending arraignment.

City man arrested for leaving 2-year-old child unsupervised...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested for child endangerment after his 2-year-old was found wandering on a city street late Tuesday morning.  Jamestown police were called to an intersection on the eastside shortly before 11 a.m. on a report of the child being outside and unsupervised.  Officers say when they arrived... they learned that 33 year-old David Burkhart-the-third was responsible for the child.  Burkhart was later arrested for endangering the welfare of a child... and, was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.  The child was uninjured and placed in the temporary care of a family friend.

County Legislature to meet at Jackson Center for this month's voting session...
It's the 25th anniversary for the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown... and, the Chautauqua County Legislature will be holding it's July meeting there.  The legislature recently voted unanimously to hold the meeting at the center... which honors the legacy of Jackson... who was lead prosecutor at the Nuremburg War Crimes trials in Germany following World War-Two.  Jamestown Democrat Tom Nelson is pleased they'll be hosting... and, says the "Jackson Center is a great place to meet.  Ellicott Republican Lisa Vanstrom echoed those sentiments... and, she's looking forward to being part of the center's 25th anniversary.  In addition to the 25th anniversary of the Jackson Center... Vanstrom also noted that this is the 80th anniversary of the start of the Nuremburg War Crimes trials.  The legislature meeting will be held in two weeks... on Wed., July 22... beginning at 6:30 p.m.

United Way now accepting nominations for this year's Joseph H. Mason Award...
The United Way of Chautauqua County is seeking nominations for its 45th annual Joseph H. Mason Award.  The honor recognizes local union members -- active or retired -- who demonstrate exceptional commitment to community service.  Executive Director Amy Rohler is encouraging the public to consider nominating someone who is not only a union member, but also volunteers their time to help their community... including teachers, police or firemen, or a factory worker represented by a union.  Last year's Mason Award was awarded posthumously to the late Jim Bickhart of Dunkirk, marking the first time the award went to someone in the north county.  Rohler says the United Way must receive nomination forms by Sept. 1... and, their labor committee will decide on who is honored.  The award recipient will be honored at UWCHQ's annual Salute to Labor Dinner on Wed., Oct. 21 at Chautauqua Institution's Athenaeum Hotel.  Nomination forms are available to download online at the United Way website.  Completed forms can be mailed to 208 Pine St., Jamestown, New York 14701.

A man from Jamestown has been arrested for child endangerment after his 2-year-old was found wandering on a city street late Tuesday morning.  Jamestown police were called to an intersection on the eastside shortly before 11 a.m. on a report of the child being outside and unsupervised.  Officers say when they arrived... they learned that 33 year-old David Burkhart III was responsible for the child.  Burkhart was later arrested for endangering the welfare of a child... and, was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.  The child was uninjured and placed in the temporary care of a family friend. 

City woman arrested for violating order of protection on Greater Jamestown Riverwalk last weekend...
A woman from Jamestown has been arrested on the city's Riverwalk for allegedly violating an order of protection... and, resisting police.  Officers were called to the scene shortly before 10:30 p.m. last Friday for an unrelated complaint.  On arrival... police spotted 25 year-old Samantha Lugo in violation of the active "stay-away" order.  Lugo fled on foot after seeing officers... but, she was quickly located nearby.  She's accused of resisting arrest after a brief struggle with officers before being taken into custody.  Lugo was charged with first-degree criminal contempt... and, resisting arrest.  She was jailed pending arraignment.

Man from Jamestown arrested for DWAI following well-being check on city's eastside...
A well-being check last Friday morning led to the arrest of a Jamestown man for driving while under the influence of drugs.  City police were called to the area of East Second Street shortly before 1 a.m. to check on the driver.  Officers say they found that 41 year-old Brandon Fogle was operating the vehicle with a revoked license... and, found that he was driving under the influence.  Police arrested Fogle for DWAI-Drugs... third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation... and, other vehicle and traffic infractions.  Fogle was released with appearance tickets for City Court.

Wendel pushes getting Dunkirk to the "front of the line" when it comes to NYS siting a new, nuclear power plant...
Chautauqua County's top-elected official is praising a recent forum on using Advanced Nuclear Power... and, wants to know how Dunkirk can "get to the front of the line."  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel... following last week's "Nuclear 101" forum held in the north county about the idea of retrofitting the former NRG Plant to general power using nuclear energy.  Wendel says he's convinced it's the way to go to produce more power for the state... and, do it responsibly.  He says the newer technologies reduce emissions significantly and cleaner power production is what's needed.  State Senator George Borrello hosted the forum... and, he admits that there is also plenty of controversy still surrounding nuclear energy.  Wendel says he was able to speak with the head of "Nuclear New York" and the other experts on hand afterwards... and, asked questions... namely how does the former NRG Power Plant become part of the equation.  He says he also wants to follow up with Governor Kathy Hochul to reiterate the county's interest.  Wendel made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Glenora Radio Network stations.   

Sherman man arrestee after alleged burglary at condemned home...
A man from Sherman has been arrested for allegeldy breaking into a condemned home in the town about a week before Independence Day.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the unidentified location shortly before 8:30 a.m. last Friday on the burglary report.  Their investigation found that 62 year-old Kevin Cole was inside the condemned residence about a week prior -- on Sat., June 27 -- and he was not authorized to be there.  Cole was issued an appearance ticket for Sherman Town Court on one count of second-degree criminal trespass.

United Way brings in more than $8,500 in Community Baby Shower...
The final numbers have been tallied for the United Way of Chautauqua County's annual Community Baby Shower.  This year's drive generated more than $8,500 worth of new baby items.  Executive Director Amy Rohler says the United Way's community partners recently collected the items at its Dunkirk and Jamestown offices... and, includes everything from Catholic Charities, Rural Ministries and The Salvation Army.  Community Relations Coordinator Dan Siracuse spoke with some of those partner agencies who collected items at the Dunkirk office.  He says it's a good reminder of the work the United Way does because they are often in the background of those efforts.  The new baby items, which were collected at seven locations across Chautauqua County, will be distributed to local at-risk moms and their newborns.

Gillibrand renews call for banning "Memecoins" from being issued or sponsored by lawmakers...
New York's Junior U.S. Senator is renewing her call to bar all elected officials... and, their spouses... from issuing or sponsoring their own digital assests.  Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand's new push comes following new reporting on President Trump's personal financial disclosures -- which show that his single largest source of income in 2025... $636-million -- came from issuing a memecoin.  Under the proposal... which Gillibrand has championed alongside a group of colleagues... it would be illegal for President Trump to issue or sponsor any digital asset, including memecoins. The First Lady also issued her own memecoin and separately reported $6-million in income from NFTs and other digital collectibles.  Gillibrand calls it "a commonsense requirement that should get broad bipartisan support -- public officials and their spouses should not be issuing memecoins."

Incoming Sophmore at Forestville High School dies in drowning on Lake Erie last Friday...
A teenager from Forestville drowned in the waters of Lake Erie in the town of Evans this past Friday afternoon.  Evans Town Police say they were called to Lake Erie Beach Park at about 3:30 p.m. on a report that the 15-year-old -- now identified as Sky Hahn -- had gone underwater... and did not resurface. Officers say the Hahn was later found after being spotted by park lifeguards, who removed him from the water and immediately began life-saving measures until additional emergency personnel arrived.  The teen was then transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital for emergency treatment.

In a message to district families Saturday afternoon... Forestville School Superintendent John O'Connor announced that Hahn was the drowning victim... and he was to have begun his sophomore year at the school this fall.  O'Connor says Hahn could not be saved despite the efforts of lifeguards and emergency personnel.  He added that the boy was "a valued member of the Forestville family, and his loss will be deeply felt by classmates, friends, faculty, staff, and all who knew him."  O'Connor says Forestville High School was open Monday for people who wished to come together.  Evans police also say counseling services are available through the Forestville and Lake Shore school districts for students, staff and families affected by this incident.

Three injured in July 4th boat collision on Chautauqua Lake...         
There were some scary moments on Chautauqua Lake on Saturday night as two boats collided in the Mayville area.  Sheriff's officers say three people among the eight on the two vessels were injured when the accident occured nearly Prendergast Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m.  Deputies say the three were taken to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital in Jamestown for treatment... while one was later flown to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa. for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.  The Sheriff's Office Navigation Division is investigating and were assisted by their road patrol... the county's WET Team, North Lake Fire Department... the Chautauqua Fire Department, and County Medic.

Fireworks go off last Saturday night... without a hitch... as threat of storms fails to materialize in Jamestown-area...
The rain held off -- for the most part -- across Chautauqua County Saturday night for the fireworks displays in Lakewood... and, elsewhere for July 4th with large crowds on hand for the nation's 250th birthday.  There was some rain in the area earlier Saturday... but, was pretty much gone by late day.  Fireworks and parades were held in Lakewood... Bemus Point... Dunkirk... Findley Lake and Mayville... to help celebrate America's birthday.

Kennedy woman arrested for menacing with a knife...       
A woman from Kennedy is accused of threatening another person with a knife during an incident in Kennedy Sunday afternoon.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene about 2:30 p.m., and, determined that 34 year-old Ashley Harrison had displayed a knife to to person... putting them in fear of physical injury.  Harrison was soon after arrested for second-degree menacing... and she was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.

Man arrested in Jamestown for stealing E-bike, and forcibly touching female JPD officer...
A 34 year-old man arrested for allegedly stealing an E-bike from a home on Jamestown's southside is also accused of groping a female officer.  City police were called to the address shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday for a reported larceny.  Officers determined that Tony Mosley had taken the bike... and, he was later found and taken into custody.  Police say was charged with petty larceny.  However... when officers were processing Mosley at the city jail... he allegedly touched the female officer's "intimate" areas... and, he was additionally charged with forcible touching.  He was jailed pending arraignment. 

New wall mural in downtown Dunkirk unveiled after several month delay...
A mural in downtown Dunkirk that's part of a countywide public art initiative has finally been completed after several months of delays.  However... it was in time for the July 4th Holiday.  City and county representatives were on hand last Thursday for a ribbon cutting and dedication of the mural at the Coburn Block on Central Avenue.  The mural -- entitled "Just Breaking the Surface" -- depicts a walleye "erupting" out of Lake Erie.  Special Projects Coordinator Rebecca Wurster with the county's Department of Planning and Development, read a statement by Connecticut-based artist Ryan Christenson, who created the mural.  He calls it an "energetic, visual experience."  It's the first mural in the Great Lakes area created by Christenson... who is known professionally as "ARCY."  He says it became apparent to him that Lake Erie is part of the community's identity, adding that the walleye, harbor and pier all tell a story about Dunkirk.  The mural is part of the Paint CHQ project.... and, was to be completed last summer, but travel issues with a prior artist caused the delay.

AAA of Western New York says 72.2-million Americans to be traveling this 4th of July weekend... celebrating nation's 250th birthday...
Just over 72-million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more during this long, Fourth of July holiday period.  That's up from last year... due largely to it being the nation's 250th birthday.  With that... pack your patience, and fluids for dealing with the heat.  The majority of us will be traveling by car.  That from AAA of Western New York Travel Advisory, Beth Steves... who says nearly 85% will be traveling that way.  She says that translates to about 61.4-million.  During a recent on-line press event hosted by AAA this week... Steves also noted that slightly more people will be flying this year.  She says be sure to bring the required ID... among others.  She adds making sure the airline has your contact information, and get text alerts from your airline... and, have the apps for your airline downloaded.  AAA Communications Director Elizabeth Carey says higher gas price aren't stopping people from driving to their destinations.  Prices have come down in recent days... but, in the immediate Jamestown-area... are still around $4.25 to $4.30 for regular, unleaded.

Parades, celebrations, fireworks to celebrate USA's 250th birthday on July 4th...
America's 250th birthday is being celebrated in grand style from Coast-to-Coast... and, there will be plenty of celebrating in Chautauqua County.  Several local communities will be hosting fireworks displays and day-long activities.  In the immediate Jamestown-area... County Legislator Jamie Gustafson of Lakewood says they'll be kicking things off at 9 a.m. at Hartley Park with the annual Firecracker 10K run/walk.  There'll also be vendors and music during the day before the fireworks at 10 p.m.  Not to be outdone... Dunkirk will have it's annual day of activities at their park and pier.  That from Legislator Bob Bankowski who says he and other legislators will be there, along with live music from three bands, and fireworks to cap off the day.  Mayville will also have a full-day of activities... starting with their annual parade tomorrow morning... beginning at 10 a.m.  That from Findley Lake Legislator Martin Proctor.... who says fireworks at Lakeside Park will begin shortly after dusk.  There will also be fireworks in the village of Bemus Point... and the traditional flare lighting on Chautauqua Lake will take place at 10 p.m.

One of the best ways to "beat the heat" this week is to get out on the waters of Chautauqua Lake... and, this year may be the best in some time.  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel... who recently took a second tour to check lake conditions with Chautauqua Lake Association General Manager Heather Nolan-Caskey.  In particular... he says what a difference a year makes in places like Burtis Bay... which is showing no excess weeds... or matting of weeds.  Wendel says the later onset of hot weather may have helped curb the weed growth... but, add that the CLA getting out earlier to harvest weeds was a major factor.  He says that prevents many of the seeds from the plants from dropping and taking root at the bottom.  Wendel adds the north basin also looks good... though there is some algae growth in some place.  He says, though, that so far there have been no signficant reports of Harmful Algal Blooms in the water.  Wendel made his comments for this weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Glenora Radio Network stations.

Irving man accused of threatening another person with a deadly weapon...
A north county man has been arrested after allegedly threatening another person with a deadly weapon.  Sheriff's officers were called to a report of an altercation on Routes 5 and 20 in Irving just after Midnight Friday.  Deputies say their investigation found that 38 year-old Jamar Fountain of Irving intentionally put a person of reasonable fear of serious physical injury by displaying an unidentified deadly weapon.  Officers located Fountain a short time later... and, he was arrested for second-degree menacing... and, second-degree aggravated harassment.  He was taken to the County Jail pending Centralized Arraingment.

A man from Jamestown has been arrested for allegedly leaving a young child in his care unsupervised for more than 20 minutes on the city's eastside.  Jamestown police say they were called to the scene shortly before 11:30 a.m. Thursday on a report of a lost child.  Officers say they saw the child standing in front of a residence... and, the mother arrived at the scene about the same time.  The mother told police say she had left her son in the care of her boyfriend... 40 year-old Timothy Gonzalez.  However... officers say Gonzalez left the child... and, a pizza in the oven... unattended.   Police say they found Gonzalez a short time later... and, he was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant... along with charges of endangering the welfare of a child... and, second-degree criminal contempt.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

A man from Jamestown faces a contempt charge after being involved in an early morning fight in the presence of someone with an order of protection against him.  City police say they were called to a report of the fight near the intersection of Buffalo Street and Beechview Avenue shortly before 2:30 p.m.  Officers say they found that one of the subjects at the scene... 19 year-old Dimari Fields... was in the presence of a female that he had a "stay away" order of protection against him.  Fields was arrested without incident for second-degree criminal contempt... and, he was jailed pending arraignment.

A city woman is accused of hiding to avoid capture by police seeking to arrest her on a bench warrant.  Jamestown police say they were called to an eastside address shortly after 10 p.m. Monday to speak with someone involved in a prior incident.  Officers say 48 year-old Ami Duvall opened the door... then quickly shut it closed.  Police say they knew of the City Court Warrant for Duvall's arrest... and, then checked the apartment... and, found Duvall hiding in a wall cutout.  After several commands to come out... she did so and was taken into custody on the warrant... and, for resisting arrest.  She was held pending arraignment.

Borrello host's "Nuclear 101" forum at SUNY Fredonia...
A forum on the possibilities of using nuclear power in Chautauqua County was intended to educate -- not advocate.  That from State Senator George Borrello... who hosted a Local Leaders "Nuclear 101" program at the SUNY College at Fredonia.  Borrello invited local business and government leaders to Tuesday night's forum to get a better understanding of what "advanced nuclear" power could present for Dunkirk and the county.  The Sunset Bay Republican says a better understanding of it can help better inform people because it remains controversial.  Borrello's forum featured a panel of experts from academia, the nuclear industry, organized labor, finance and government.  One was Keith Schue with Nuclear New York... who says fossil fuel generation emits pollutants into the atmosphere.  He adds nuclear power is very different because it involves the smashing of atoms in a contained area.  Borrello says the forum was set up jointly with "Nuclear New York" to give local decision-makers factual information as New York evaluates potential locations for future advanced nuclear development. 

Jamestown woman arrested late last week for shoplifting...
A city woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing multiple beauty items from a store on Jamestown's southside.  City police were called to a reported larceny at the unidentified business about 9 p.m. last Friday... and found that 43 year-old Chelline Occhipinti concealed the items in her purse and passed all points of sale without paying.  She was found nearby the store, and taken into custody for petty larceny... and, held pending arraignment.

Westfield woman arrested for allowing child to wander unsupervised...
A woman from Westfield has been arrested for allegedly failing to supervise her young child... who was found walking late last month along Route 394.  Westfield Police say they were notified of the unsupervised child... who was found walking in front of Ramsey's Playhouse at 209 North Portage St. on June 21.  Their investigation led to the arrest of 35 year-old Heather Close for endangering the welfare of a child.  Officers say the child was returned home safely without injury.  Close was charged... and, issued an appearance ticket for Westfield Town Court at a later date.

A woman from Jamestown has been arrested after allegedly trying to hide from officers seeking to arrest her on a bench warrant.  City police say they were called to an eastside address shortly after 10 p.m. Monday to speak with someone involved in a prior incident.  Officers say 48 year-old Ami Duvall opened the door... then quickly shut it.  Police say they knew of the City Court Warrant for Duvall's arrest... and, then checked the apartment... and, found Duvall hiding in a wall cutout inside the apartment.  After several commands to come out... she did so and was taken into custody.  She ws taken to the city jail on one count of resisting arrest and on the warrant... pending arraignment.

Man arrested in Jamestown for DWI and gun possession...
A welfare check on a person on Jamestown's eastside has led to the arrest of a 20 year-old man for drunk driving... and, being in possession of an illegal handgun.  City police say they responded to the scene for a stopped car in the area of Bowen and Dover Streets about 7 a.m. Tuesday.  Officers say they found Noah Ingrao unresponsive behind the wheel of the vehicle... and, investigated.  Police determined that Ingrao had been driving drunk... and, they also found that he was in possession of the handgun.  Officers arrested Ingrao for DWI... driving with a blood alcohol content over .08, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, multiple traffic infractions.

AAA Western NY warns residents and motorists to be careful in the heat...
Our hot weather heading into the Fourth of July weekend is leading officials with AAA to warn people to be careful as the temperature rises to 90 and above.  A Heat Advisory is in effect for Chautauqua County now through Friday night... with heat indexes rising to the upper 90s to 100 or more.  AAA Western New York A Spokeswoman Elizabeth Carey also urges parents to be careful with your children... because -- on average -- about 37 children die inside vehicles after their parents or guardians forgot them inside.  She says the temperature inside those vehicles can climb very quickly.  Carey says a good tip is make sure to leave your keys... or pocket book in the back seat where your child is to make sure you get them out of the car.

With many residents planning to attend parades... cookouts... sporting events...  festivals, and fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday, county officials urge everyone to plan ahead and take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses.  It's important to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and check on elderly neighbors.

Jersey Mike's opens first Chautauqua Co. location at Lakewood Village Center...
The ribbon has been cut on the newest chain-store eatery in the Lakewood area... with the Grand Opening of the first Jersey Mike's Subs in Chautauqua County at 279 East Fairount Ave. Wednesday morning.  The CHQ Chamber began a day of ribbon cuttings at the restaurant... but, Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer Dan Heitzenrater was already enjoying the smell of fresh baked bread inside... even though it was 9 a.m.  Heitzenrater says it's ideally located in the plaza, which is across the street from the Chautauqua Mall.  Jersey Mike's General Manager Will Sullivan says they're excited to be opening the new location... and, says proceeds from their first five days will go to the Jamestown Family YMCA.  County Executive P-J Wendel was also on hand to welcome the new restaurant... noting that lives about a mile away, and will definately be a customer.  Representatives from the village... and others were also on hand.

As mentioned... the new Jersey's Mikes will be donating proceeds from their first five-days they're open to the Jamestown-area YMCA.  Director John Barber was on hand to thank Sullivan and his staff... and he says the folks at Jersey Mike's reached out to them to help.  Sullivan says they'll be employing 20 people at their Lakewood location... which is now open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Town of Clymer cuts ribbon on new Playground...
Summer is here... and, many families will take their children to local parks and playgrounds to enjoy the weather.  In the town of Clymer... local kids have some new playground equipment to play on thanks to two organizations who have partnered to create new play opportunities for them.  Clymer Town Board member Todd Kolstee says they were told about the possibilities with KABOOM and the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation... with the foundation funding most of the project, along with the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.  Previously... Kolstee says the community foundation helped them build the original playground at the Town-Community Park in 2024.  He says they were notified that the new project had been approved this past February.  Kolstee says a number of local businesses and organizations supported their efforts... along with Clymer Central School in designing the playground.  He says Clymer Hardware provided materials... and Eastern States and Lictis Keystone also provided support.  The ribbon was cut on the new playground this past Saturday.
