Borrello says huge buy of new, compressed natural gas buses by MTA shows flaws in electric bus push...
A decision by the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority to buy 650 new, compressed natural gas buses is getting some scrutiny from a state lawmaker from the region. The move is considered the biggest single upgrade to the MTA fleet in 13 years. However... it is a move contrary to previous efforts to go electric. It caught the eye of local State Senator George Borrello... who pointed to ongoing problems with electric buses. Borrello says it's questionable, though, as to whether the move is designed to get Hochul, and state Democrats, "through this election." The MTA says the buses will be purchased with funding secured by Governor Kathy Hochul in the MTA’s 2025-29 Capital Plan and will fulfill the MTA’s commitment to modernize its bus fleet made in the "Next Stop: Faster Buses, Better Service" plan announced by the governor and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani this summer. The MTA says using compressed natural gas is a "cheaper, greener alternative to diesel fuel." Borrello says the state needs a more "common sense" approach to energy policy. He says electric school buses used in our region have already had major issues... including losing electric power in the cold weather. He says that's the big reason why the electric bus mandate has been delayed for five-years.
