Rowland says St. Susan's Center coping with loss of compressor to refrigeration/freezer unit...
Despite the recent vandalism to the compressor system of their huge refrigeration-freezer unit... the Jamestown-area's largest soup kitchen is soldiering on. That from the head of the St. Susan's Center on Water Street in Jamestown. Executive Director Cherie Rowland says... thanks to several community partners... they've been able to cope so far in feeding people in need... thanks in large part to Jamestown Ice & Storage which has taken most of their perishable food items. They've also been helped by other entities -- including several area food pantries. The Center reported Monday that someone broke into their location about 5:30 a.m. Sunday and "completely gutted the system... " apparently stealing components for their monitary value. Rowland says this hampers their recovery efforts to build a food supply of -- say chicken -- from local restaurants and stores they can use eventually for a days' meals. She says they'll add to the amount of meat or other food stuffs they have and soon they have enough to feed the 150 to 200 people they receive daily. Rowland says this also points out the urgency of getting a new, walk-in freezer at the center. She says they have been awarded two state grants... but, adds they need to match those dollars. If you would like to help out... go to their website at stsusanscenter.org.
