While Corrections Officer's strike continues, Wendel says he believes Gov. Hochul could end it quickly...
There's still no end in sight for the nearly three-week long wildcat strike by New York State Corrections Officers at several upstate facilities. However... it could be ended today by one person -- Governor Kathy Hochul. Those are the feelings of Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel... who has recently visited the Lakeview Shock facility near Brocton... and, the Collins facility. The state has emphasized that the strike violates New York's Taylor Law. However... Wendel says that's not the full story... because the state also has a responsbility to provide for a "safe environment" at work. He adds they've also been mandated to work 24 hour shifts at times. Wendel emphasized the corrections officers main beef is safety inside the prisons. He says it's also become an issue for inmates at these facilities. Wendel says -- if Hochul wanted to -- she could at least pause the state's HALT Act... which restricts the use of solitary confinement as a deterent to bad behavior. He says Hochul could sign an executive order to do that.
